## What it does

The skill ships a reference map for React Flow v12 plus a behaviour contract for the agent writing your code. Topics are split into files: fundamentals, custom nodes and edges, interactivity, state management, TypeScript, layout with dagre or elkjs, components and hooks, performance and styling, accessibility, SSR and hydration, Playwright E2E tests, and advanced patterns such as undo/redo and computed flows.

A pitfalls section pairs each common failure with the next move. Blank canvas with no errors, `nodeTypes` warnings, edges in the wrong place, inputs inside nodes that refuse clicks, nodes snapping back after a drag. The triage template asks the agent to check the installed React Flow version, TypeScript or JavaScript, the state approach, expected node count and styling method before branching.

The contract is specific. Import from `@xyflow/react`, always pull in `@xyflow/react/dist/style.css`, give the `<ReactFlow>` parent nonzero width and height, and keep `nodeTypes` and `edgeTypes` outside the component body or in `useMemo`. Hide handles with `visibility: hidden` or `opacity: 0` — `display: none` breaks dimension calculation. Worth checking your lockfile first: the guidance was reviewed against `@xyflow/react` 12.12.0, and v12+ does not mean every minor release carries every feature.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill react-flow -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill framara-react-flow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/framara-react-flow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/framara-react-flow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill framara-react-flow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/framara-react-flow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill framara-react-flow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/framara-react-flow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install framara/react-flow-skill framara-react-flow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/framara-react-flow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill framara-react-flow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/framara/react-flow-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/framara-react-flow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add framara/react-flow-skill --skill framara-react-flow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/framara/react-flow-skill/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an interactive node-and-edge graph
- write a custom node with inputs and buttons
- fix a blank canvas that throws no errors
- auto-layout nodes with dagre or elkjs
- cut re-renders while dragging nodes

## Example prompts
- create a custom node with an input field and two handles, give the input the nodrag class
- my edges render in the wrong position — check the handles and tell me what to fix
- lay out the graph with elkjs and add MiniMap plus Controls

# React Flow

## Overview

Use this skill to build, customize, debug, and optimize interactive node-based UIs with React Flow (@xyflow/react v12+). Covers everything from basic setup to advanced patterns like computed flows, sub-flows, and external layout integration.

## Version and source policy

Guidance reviewed against `@xyflow/react` **12.12.0** on **2026-09-28**. Check the target project's installed version and lockfile before applying an API; “v12+” does not mean every minor release has every feature. Preserve the project's state and styling choices unless the task requires changing them.

Use the [official documentation index](https://reactflow.dev/llms.txt) to find a specific guide or API page. For version-sensitive behavior, check [release notes](https://github.com/xyflow/xyflow/releases) and the installed package's declarations/source. Read only the references relevant to the task. Examples with omitted imports or `...` are integration sketches, not standalone applications.

## Agent behavior contract (follow these rules)

1. For v12 projects, import from `@xyflow/react`. If maintaining a legacy project, follow its installed API until a migration is in scope.
2. Always import the stylesheet: `import '@xyflow/react/dist/style.css'` (or `base.css` when replacing the default visual styles).
3. The `<ReactFlow>` parent container **must** resolve to nonzero width and height (explicit sizing or a sized flex/grid layout).
4. Define `nodeTypes` and `edgeTypes` objects **outside** component bodies or wrap in `useMemo` to prevent re-renders.
5. Use custom nodes for application-specific content or handles; built-in nodes remain suitable for simple labeled graphs.
6. Use the `nodrag` class on interactive elements inside custom nodes (inputs, buttons, selects).
7. Use `nowheel` class on scrollable elements inside custom nodes to prevent zoom interference.
