# formatting-insight-axes

Picks the right y-axis unit when you create or update a PostHog insight: seconds, milliseconds, percentages, currency. Stops the agent from adding formulas just to convert units.

## What it does

The skill tells the agent which y-axis format to set when it creates or updates an insight through `posthog:insight-create` and `posthog:insight-update`. The two insight kinds configure it in different places: TrendsQuery uses `trendsFilter.aggregationAxisFormat`, while SQL insights (`DataVisualizationNode`) set it per column in `chartSettings.yAxis[].settings.formatting`.

The point is to kill manual unit math. Instead of `formula: "A / 60"` plus a "mins" postfix, the skill sets `duration` and PostHog picks a friendly unit per value: `90s` renders as `1m 30s`, `5400s` as `1h 30m`. Formats include `numeric`, `duration`, `duration_ms`, `percentage`, `percentage_scaled`, `currency` and `short`, with `aggregationAxisPrefix`, `aggregationAxisPostfix` and `decimalPlaces` alongside.

Currency needs care. `currency` renders in the project's base currency, so for values pinned to USD the skill advises `aggregationAxisPrefix: "$"` with `decimalPlaces: 2` — otherwise a EUR-base project labels dollar values with `€`. Skip a `"%"` postfix: the percentage formats append the sign themselves and you get `50%%`. In SQL insights `style` is only `none`, `number`, `short` or `percent`, so duration and currency go through `prefix`/`suffix` or the SQL itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill formatting-insight-axes -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/formatting-insight-axes/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill formatting-insight-axes -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill formatting-insight-axes -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills formatting-insight-axes
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill formatting-insight-axes -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/formatting-insight-axes
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill formatting-insight-axes -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PostHog/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/omnibus/formatting-insight-axes/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- show session length in readable units without a conversion formula
- chart p95 page load latency in milliseconds
- label an axis in the project currency or pin a fixed symbol
- render a 0–1 ratio as a percentage
- compact large counts into 1.2K and 3.4M

## Example prompts
- Build an insight on $pageleave with avg $session_duration and set the axis format to duration
- Graph checkout_completed over checkout_started with formula A / B and percentage_scaled formatting
- In the SQL insight, format the conversion_rate column as percent with one decimal place

# Formatting insight axes

PostHog renders insights with a built-in axis formatter. Use it instead of
contorting the query or a literal prefix/postfix to fake units.

The two insight kinds configure it in different places:

- **TrendsQuery** — `trendsFilter.aggregationAxisFormat` (this page, below)
- **SQL insights** (`DataVisualizationNode`) — per-column
  `settings.formatting` (see [SQL insights](#sql-insights-datavisualizationnode))

## The anti-pattern

If you are reaching for any of these, stop and pick a format below first:

- `formula: "A / 60"` with `aggregationAxisPostfix: " mins"` — manual seconds -> minutes
- `formula: "A / 1000"` with `aggregationAxisPostfix: " s"` — manual ms -> seconds
- `formula: "A * 100"` with `aggregationAxisPostfix: "%"` — manual ratio -> percent
- `aggregationAxisPostfix: "ms"` / `"s"` / `"min"` / `"hr"` on raw values

These freeze the unit at one scale. The built-in formatter picks a friendly
unit per value (1.5s, 2m 12s, 1h 4m) and keeps the underlying series numerically
correct for further math, breakdowns, and alerts.

## Available formats

Set `trendsFilter.aggregationAxisFormat` on the TrendsQuery:

| Value | Use when the series is... | Renders as |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| `numeric` (default) | a plain count                            | `1,234`                     |
```
