# better-writing

Rewrites, drafts and reviews prose for emails, reports, docs and UI copy. Useful when text reads generic, salesy or like a chatbot wrote it.

## What it does

The skill reads the brief before touching a sentence. It works out the channel, audience, relationship, stakes, the outcome you want and the constraints, such as length, dialect or wording that has to stay. Hand it a voice sample and it audits that sample against its tell lists first, then asks before treating it as the style source of truth.

Then comes the audit. Four reference files do the work: `references/ai-writing-patterns.md` for machine-writing artefacts, `references/structures-and-phrases.md` for slop phrases and formulaic shapes, `references/genre-tells.md` for genre fingerprints and exemptions, and `references/voice-and-context.md` for voice calibration. Edits follow clusters of tells, not a single quirk. Nothing gets invented either. Where a draft lacks a fact, the skill leaves a gap marker like `[example needed: a customer who hit this]` instead of making one up.

There is a light-edit mode. Say light edit, copy edit, proofread or keep my voice and every word starts as kept; a change needs a failure you can name, such as a typo, an ambiguity, a factual inconsistency, a house-style rule from the brief or filler that adds nothing. Landing on a tell list is not a failure by itself. Worth knowing if you expect a heavy rewrite: in this mode the skill puts back anything it cannot justify.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forjd/better-writing --skill better-writing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/better-writing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/better-writing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forjd/better-writing --skill better-writing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/better-writing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forjd/better-writing --skill better-writing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/better-writing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install forjd/better-writing better-writing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/better-writing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/better-writing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add forjd/better-writing --skill better-writing -a opencode
```
## When to use it
- strip ChatGPT-sounding phrasing from a draft
- rewrite an email so the point lands in the first sentence
- copy edit documentation without losing required wording
- match tone to a specific genre and audience
- keep the writer's voice through a light edit
## Example prompts
- Rewrite this newsletter draft and cut the generic phrasing
- Light edit only: typos and ambiguities, keep my voice
- Audit this report draft for AI-writing tells and show me what fails
# Better Writing
Use this skill to make prose stronger without flattening the writer. The goal is not to make everything casual or punchy. The goal is to make the text fit its audience, purpose, and medium while removing generic AI tells, filler, fake authority, and formulaic structure.
## Core workflow
1. Read the brief before editing.
   - Identify the genre/medium (=channel), audience, relationship, stakes, outcome (=purpose), and constraints (length, requested dialect, house style, exact wording).
   - Preserve required facts, citations, constraints, legal wording, quoted text, and formatting.
   - If the user gives a voice sample, audit it against the tell lists first; if it scores high, ask before treating it as the style source of truth.
   - For a draft from scratch, collect the substance before writing: the point, the facts, the writer's position, and any example or number they have. Draft by default and mark each missing fact with a gap marker such as `[example needed: a customer who hit this]`. Ask first only when the point itself is missing. Cutting tells cannot add missing content, and a brief with no facts produces generic prose however clean the sentences are.
   - If the brief says light edit, copy edit, proofread, or keep my voice, switch to light-edit mode. Every word starts as kept. A change needs a failure you can name: a grammar or spelling error, an ambiguity, a factual inconsistency, a house-style rule the brief gives, or filler that says nothing the sentence does not already say ("it is important to note that", a closer with no content). Being on a tell list is not a failure, and neither is a word you would not have chosen: "delve" carries its sentence's meaning, so it is a word choice, not filler. On the second read, put back every change you cannot justify that way.
2. Set the writing read.
