## What it does

\`forex-list` is a set of instructions for the agent, not a standalone program. It describes how to ask the Octagon MCP server for a listing of actively traded currency pairs and get back a table of pairs with the reason each one sees activity. The skill covers the three categories — USD majors, crosses without the dollar, emerging-market exotics — plus reference tables on liquidity tiers, spreads and typical daily ranges.

Queries go through the `octagon-agent` tool with a natural-language prompt, whether you want the full listing or just the most liquid crosses. Octagon MCP has to be configured in your agent first; the skill points at `references/mcp-setup.md` for that. Without the server in place the tool call has nothing to reach, so check your MCP config before the first prompt.

There is also background material: session hours in UTC for Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York, the overlap windows, drivers for pairs like EUR/USD and USD/JPY, and the commodity links behind AUD/USD, USD/CAD and NZD/USD. Some of it is plain theory on base and quote currency, bid/ask and spreads.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill forex-list -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/forex-list/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/forex-list/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill forex-list -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/forex-list/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill forex-list -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/forex-list/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**

# Forex List

Retrieve comprehensive information about actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market using the Octagon MCP server.

## Prerequisites

Ensure Octagon MCP is configured in your AI agent (Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, etc.). See [references/mcp-setup.md](references/mcp-setup.md) for installation instructions.

## Workflow

### 1. Define Scope

Determine which currency pair categories you want to explore:
- **Majors**: USD paired with major currencies
- **Crosses**: Major currencies without USD
- **Exotics**: Emerging market currencies

### 2. Execute Query via Octagon MCP

Use the `octagon-agent` tool with a natural language prompt:

```
Retrieve a full listing of actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market.
```

**MCP Call Format:**

```json
{
  "server": "octagon-mcp",
  "toolName": "octagon-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Retrieve a full listing of actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market."
  }
}
```

### 3. Expected Output

The agent returns categorized currency pair information:

| Currency Pair | Description/Reason for Activity |
|---------------|--------------------------------|
| EUR/USD | Most liquid pair, Eurozone and U.S. economic interdependence |
| GBP/USD | High liquidity, sensitive to U.K./U.S. macroeconomic data |
| USD/JPY | Japanese Yen safe-haven status, U.S. interest rates |
| AUD/USD | Commodity price trends, Australian/U.S. economic cycles |
| USD/CHF | Swiss Franc safe-haven, U.S. monetary policy |
| CAD/USD | Oil prices, North American economic indicators |
| EUR/CHF | Range-bound markets, Euro-Swiss Franc correlations |
| AUD/NZD | Cross-Pacific trade, commodity-linked volatility |

**Data Sources**: octagon-crypto-agent, octagon-web-search-agent

### 4. Interpret Results

See [references/interpreting-results.md](references/interpreting-results.md) for guidance on:
- Understanding currency pair categories
- Analyzing liquidity and volatility
- Identifying key drivers
- Selecting pairs for trading
