## What it does

The skill installs the `sports-skills` CLI and hands your agent football data across leagues: Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, MLS, Champions League, World Cup, Championship, Serie B, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga, Serie A Brazil, Russian Premier League, Scottish, Belgian and Turkish top flights, European Championship. Call `get_competitions` for the live list. Queries run through the CLI or the Python SDK, and no keys are involved.

Coverage is uneven, and that is the part worth knowing up front. ESPN covers every league — standings, schedules, lineups, match stats. Understat adds xG for the top 5 leagues only, FPL supplies season leaders and injury news for the Premier League only, and `get_head_to_head` works across 12 European domestic leagues, same-division meetings only. When an endpoint has no coverage for a league, it returns an empty payload with an explanatory message rather than an error. Start with `references/api-reference.md` for endpoints and data shapes.

Python 3.10+ is required. A season is written as `{league-slug}-{year}`, where the year is the season's start year; for the current season call `get_current_season` instead of hardcoding a year. Resolve teams with `search_team` and pass the numeric `team_id` for `get_head_to_head`, `get_team_strength` and `get_match_forecast` — names like "Paris Saint-Germain" can collapse onto the wrong club. Live scores are out of scope: data updates post-match.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill football-data -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/football-data/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/football-data/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill football-data -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/football-data/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill football-data -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/football-data/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install machina-sports/sports-skills football-data
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/football-data/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill football-data -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills --path skills/football-data
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/football-data/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add machina-sports/sports-skills --skill football-data -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/football-data/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull the current standings for the Premier League or Russian Premier League
- check today's fixture list
- compare two clubs by head-to-head history
- rate a club's strength from Elo
- get xG and player stats for a top-5 league match

## Example prompts
- show me the premier-league-2025 standings
- what matches are on today?
- compare Real Madrid and Barcelona head to head

  Football (soccer) data across the world's major leagues — standings, schedules, match stats, xG, transfers, player profiles, head-to-head history, team strength (Elo), and match forecasts. Zero config, no API keys. Covers Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, MLS, Champions League, World Cup, Championship, Serie B, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga, Serie A Brazil, Russian Premier League, Scottish/Belgian/Turkish top flights, European Championship, and more (call get_competitions for the live list).

  Use when: user asks about football/soccer standings, fixtures, match stats, xG, lineups, player values, transfers, injury news, league tables, daily fixtures, player profiles, head-to-head records, team strength/Elo ratings, or match odds/forecasts.
  Don't use when: user asks about American football/NFL (use nfl-data), college football (use cfb-data), NBA (use nba-data), WNBA (use wnba-data), college basketball (use cbb-data), NHL (use nhl-data), MLB (use mlb-data), tennis (use tennis-data), golf (use golf-data), cricket (use cricket-data), Formula 1 (use fastf1), or betting odds (use polymarket or kalshi). Don't use for live/real-time scores — data updates post-match. Don't use get_season_leaders or get_missing_players for non-Premier League leagues (they return empty). Don't use get_event_xg for leagues outside the top 5 (EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1).

# Football Data

Before writing queries, consult `references/api-reference.md` for endpoints, ID conventions, and data shapes.

## Setup

Before first use, check if the CLI is available:
```bash
which sports-skills || pip install sports-skills
```
If `pip install` fails (package not found or Python version error), install from GitHub:
```bash
pip install git+https://github.com/machina-sports/sports-skills.git
```
The package requires Python 3.10+. If your default Python is older, use a specific version:
```bash
python3 --version  # check version
# If < 3.10, try: python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills
# On macOS with Homebrew: /opt/homebrew/bin/python3.12 -m pip install sports-skills
```
No API keys required.

## Quick Start

Prefer the CLI — it avoids Python import path issues:
```bash
sports-skills football get_daily_schedule
````
