# fluid-functionalism

A skill for building React UIs on the shadcn/ui @fluid registry: springs instead of durations, a hover highlight that glides to the cursor, weight changes that hold layout.

## What it does

The skill installs and composes @fluid registry components, and when the library ships nothing for a job, it writes custom animation that follows the same motion system. Four jobs sit inside: read the project stack, pick and wire the right registry item, hand-write animation that belongs next to the library, and bring installed components up to the latest release.

Every run starts with a stack read: `node <skill>/scripts/stack.mjs [apps/web]` checks the dependencies FF needs (React 19, Tailwind v4, motion, shadcn wiring), settles the Radix or Base UI flavor, and flags two silent quality killers — `MotionConfig reducedMotion="user"` around the app and Inter without the `opsz` axis. It needs only Node, finishes in under a second, and writes nothing. Without Node, the same files are read by hand per `references/stack-audit.md`.

Before any install the skill verifies the target's current files and diffs same-named ones; `--overwrite` only passes when the targets are still stock. Stack facts get read fresh each run rather than cached, because a stale verdict misleads every session after it. User decisions — fluid hover declined, an off-token duration kept on purpose — live separately and are never re-raised.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --skill fluid-functionalism -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/fluid-functionalism/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --skill fluid-functionalism -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --skill fluid-functionalism -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mickadesign/fluid-functionalism fluid-functionalism
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --skill fluid-functionalism -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --path skills/fluid-functionalism
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mickadesign/fluid-functionalism --skill fluid-functionalism -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mickadesign/fluid-functionalism/tree/HEAD/skills/fluid-functionalism/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire @fluid components into a shadcn/ui project
- choose between the Radix and Base UI flavor of one component
- build a hover highlight that glides to the nearest list item
- check whether a font weight change shifts the layout
- update installed components without losing local edits

## Example prompts
- Install the @fluid sidebar component and compose it for our project
- Audit the settings dialog motion against Fluid Functionalism and tell me what's off
- I need a custom page reveal — write it against the @fluid motion system

  Build React UIs with Fluid Functionalism — a shadcn/ui registry (@fluid) of
  animated components with a shared motion system: three spring speeds, a
  hover highlight that glides to the item nearest the cursor, labels that
  change weight without layout shift. Use whenever the user mentions Fluid
  Functionalism, @fluid, or fluidfunctionalism.com, asks for UI with
  satisfying/fluid/polished motion in a React, Next.js, shadcn, Radix, or Base
  UI project, builds any interface (settings dialogs, sidebars, command menus,
  chat UIs, forms, lists, tables) in a project with @fluid components
  installed, asks to review/audit existing UI motion against the system, or
  asks to update installed @fluid components or what changed in a release.
  Also use before hand-writing animation code (hover highlights, icon swaps,
  weight changes, enter/exit transitions, page reveals, skeleton loading)
  there, so custom code follows the system instead of inventing timings.
  Bundled scripts read the stack fresh each run and write nothing.

# Fluid Functionalism

A [shadcn/ui](https://ui.shadcn.com) registry of components where every
transition makes a state change legible: springs instead of durations, one
hover highlight per list that glides to the item nearest the cursor, and
labels that get heavier without moving their neighbours. Components that touch
a primitive ship in two flavors — Radix and Base UI — with the same API.

Docs and live demos: <https://www.fluidfunctionalism.com> — every component
page has a playground and a **Copy prompt** button whose text is a
self-contained brief (install command, usage snippet, props, docs URL).

Four jobs this skill covers:

1. **Know the project** — read the stack at the start of every run (next
   section). The read is fast and exact, so nothing is cached and nothing
   can go stale.
2. **Install and compose the components** — pick the right registry item and
   flavor, wire it in, and compose around what's already built in. The
   catalog is [references/components.md](references/components.md); the craft
   for every doc page and top-level block — the exact behaviors, values, and
