## What it does

The skill spells out how a Flask app is put together and gives the agent working templates. Inside are a minimal app with `@app.route` decorators, a `create_app` factory that wires up extensions, routes split across blueprints, and request parsing through `request.args` and `request.get_json()`. Error handlers use `@app.errorhandler`, and there's a directory layout with `models`, `routes` and `services` folders.

Flask itself installs separately: `pip install flask`, plus a set like `flask-restful`, `flask-sqlalchemy` and `psycopg2-binary` for APIs and databases. The skill won't pull those in for you, so check they're already in your environment — otherwise the `SQLAlchemy` and `JWTManager` examples won't run. Gunicorn and uWSGI come up for production; keep the built-in server for development.

The skill is marked `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so you can't call it by hand from chat. It loads as reference material while the agent works on Flask code. On a Django or FastAPI project it won't do much.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill flask -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/flask/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/flask/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill flask -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/flask/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill flask -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/flask/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills flask
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/flask/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill flask -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/python/frameworks/flask
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/flask/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill flask -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/python/frameworks/flask/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up a Flask REST API from scratch
- split routes into blueprints instead of one file
- build an app factory that initialises extensions
- return JSON with a specific status code and header
- catch 404 and 400 with your own handler

## Example prompts
- Create a Flask app using the factory pattern with blueprints for users and auth
- Add JSON validation to this Flask route and return 400 when the name field is missing
- Split the current routes into blueprints and register them under the /api prefix

# Flask - Lightweight Python Web Framework

## Overview

Flask is a micro-framework for Python web development, designed for building microservices, REST APIs, and flexible web applications. Its minimalist core and extensive extension ecosystem make it ideal for projects requiring lightweight architecture, rapid development, and full control over components.

**Key Features**:
- Micro-framework philosophy (minimal core, extensible)
- Flask-RESTful for API development
- Blueprints for modular application structure
- SQLAlchemy integration via Flask-SQLAlchemy
- Jinja2 templating engine
- Built-in development server with auto-reload
- Werkzeug WSGI toolkit foundation
- Large extension ecosystem (Flask-Login, Flask-JWT, Flask-CORS)
- Production deployment with Gunicorn/uWSGI

**Installation**:
```bash
# Basic Flask
pip install flask
# Flask with common extensions
pip install flask flask-restful flask-sqlalchemy flask-login flask-cors
# With database support
pip install flask flask-sqlalchemy psycopg2-binary  # PostgreSQL
# Full microservices stack
pip install flask flask-restful marshmallow flask-jwt-extended redis
```

## Basic Application Patterns

### 1. Minimal Flask App

```python
# app.py
from flask import Flask, jsonify, request
app = Flask(__name__)
@app.route('/')
def hello():
    return jsonify({"message": "Hello, World!"})
@app.route('/api/users/<int:user_id>')
def get_user(user_id):
    return jsonify({"id": user_id, "name": f"User {user_id}"})
@app.route('/api/users', methods=['POST'])
def create_user():
    data = request.get_json()
    return jsonify({"id": 123, **data}), 201
if __name__ == '__main__':
    app.run(debug=True, host='0.0.0.0', port=5000)
```

**Run:**
```bash
# Development server
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the f9a29cbcf19a5db1 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
