# firewall-config

A skill that writes and reviews firewall rules: iptables, nftables, UFW and AWS security groups. Useful when you lock down a server perimeter or split a network into zones.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent ready-made rule sets for common jobs: a default-deny baseline, SYN flood and port scan protection, per-IP connection limits. Separate blocks cover a web server with a database backend, a Prometheus node exporter, DNS and NTP, and the emergency case of blocking a single IP during an incident.

Four areas sit inside. For iptables there are INPUT, FORWARD and OUTPUT chains saved to `rules.v4` and `rules.v6`. UFW gets application profiles and an SSH rate limit. nftables comes as a full config with `inet filter` and `ip nat` tables, dynamic rate-limit sets, and management commands such as `nft list ruleset`. AWS is handled through a Terraform security group with per-rule ingress blocks and tags.

You need root or sudo on the Linux host, and a configured AWS CLI for the cloud part. A network diagram with the allowed traffic flows matters too: with default deny, a missing flow cuts off access to the box itself. The SSH example only accepts traffic from the management subnet `10.0.100.0/24` — if your admin access comes from anywhere else, rewrite that rule before switching the policy to drop, or you lose your way in.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill firewall-config -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/firewall-config/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/firewall-config/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill firewall-config -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/firewall-config/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill firewall-config -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/firewall-config/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills firewall-config
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/firewall-config/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill firewall-config -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path security/network/firewall-config
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/firewall-config/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill firewall-config -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- close inbound traffic on a fresh server and keep only the ports you need
- split a network into zones between web, app and database tiers
- migrate rules from iptables to nftables
- restrict SSH to a management subnet
- block an IP during a security incident

## Example prompts
- set up a firewall on the new server: default deny, SSH only from 10.0.100.0/24, ports 80 and 443 open
- port my iptables rules to nftables and save the config to /etc/nftables.conf
- write a Terraform security group for the web tier with HTTPS from the internet

# Firewall Configuration

Configure host-based and cloud firewalls for network security.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Setting up a new server and need to restrict network access
- Implementing network segmentation between application tiers
- Configuring cloud security groups for AWS, GCP, or Azure resources
- Migrating from iptables to nftables
- Auditing existing firewall rules for compliance
- Responding to a security incident requiring emergency network blocks

## Prerequisites

- Root or sudo access on Linux hosts
- AWS CLI configured for cloud security groups
- Understanding of TCP/IP, ports, and protocols
- Network diagram showing required traffic flows

## iptables

### Basic Setup with Default Deny

```bash
# Flush existing rules
iptables -F
iptables -X
iptables -t nat -F
iptables -t mangle -F
# Default policies - deny all inbound, allow outbound
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
# Allow established connections
iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
# Allow loopback
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
# Drop invalid packets
iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate INVALID -j DROP
# Allow SSH (restrict to management subnet)
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s 10.0.100.0/24 -j ACCEPT
# Allow HTTP/HTTPS from anywhere
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 80,443 -j ACCEPT
# Allow ICMP (ping) with rate limiting
iptables -A INPUT -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -m limit --limit 1/s --limit-burst 4 -j ACCEPT
# Log dropped packets (rate limited to avoid log flooding)
iptables -A INPUT -m limit --limit 5/min -j LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES-DROP: " --log-level 4
# Save rules (Debian/Ubuntu)
iptables-save > /etc/iptables/rules.v4
ip6tables-save > /etc/iptables/rules.v6
```

### Anti-DDoS Rules

```bash
# SYN flood protection
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -m limit --limit 25/s --limit-burst 50 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -j DROP
