## What it does

The index holds paper abstracts. Biomedical and life-science literature makes up the largest share: PubMed journal articles plus bioRxiv and medRxiv preprints. arXiv preprints cover computer science, physics, and math. Clinical, drug, gene, disease, and epidemiology questions all fall inside that scope. A paper that lives only behind a publisher paywall or in a niche venue may not be indexed, and the general web tools are the fallback when it isn't.

The skill runs through the `firecrawl_research_*` MCP tools or the `firecrawl research` CLI subcommands. For almost any query the first move is `search_papers`, a semantic search over abstracts. If the results look thin or all-alike, you reframe the query instead of giving up. Then `related_papers` widens the set: `mode=similar` for sibling methods, `citers` for the work that builds on a seed, `references` for what the seed itself builds on. `inspect_paper` returns canonical metadata for one paper, and `read_paper` pulls in-body passages so you can check a specific claim.

There is no fixed recipe. A single named paper needs one search; an enumeration of methods needs several rounds of expansion. Don't confuse the skill with `firecrawl_search` and its `categories: ["research"]` option — that filters an ordinary web search to PubMed, bioRxiv, medRxiv, and arXiv domains and returns site pages, not the paper records in this index.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add firecrawl/skills --skill firecrawl-research-index -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/firecrawl-research-index/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add firecrawl/skills --skill firecrawl-research-index -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add firecrawl/skills --skill firecrawl-research-index -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install firecrawl/skills firecrawl-research-index
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add firecrawl/skills --skill firecrawl-research-index -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/firecrawl/skills --path skills/core/firecrawl-research-index
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add firecrawl/skills --skill firecrawl-research-index -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/firecrawl/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/core/firecrawl-research-index/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find papers by method description rather than exact title
- build a set of works on a topic instead of one best hit
- confirm that a paper actually uses a given method
- trace who cites a key paper and what it builds on
- narrow clinical and biomedical results to a specific disease

## Example prompts
- find papers on training-free AI-text detection in the research index and show the neighboring methods
- pull alternatives to Adam and expand them with related_papers
- check the full text of this paper for the benchmark it actually reports

description: Find the papers that answer a research query in Firecrawl's research paper index — a corpus of paper abstracts whose largest share is biomedical and life-science literature (PubMed, bioRxiv, medRxiv), alongside arXiv preprints in CS, physics, and math — using semantic search, semantic and structural expansion, and in-body verification. Use this skill for literature-finding and paper-retrieval tasks of any kind, including clinical, biomedical, drug, gene, disease, and other life-science questions, whether the answer is a single paper or a full multi-paper set. The index is reached only through the `firecrawl_research_*` MCP tools or the `firecrawl research` CLI subcommands. Calling `firecrawl_search` with its `categories` option set to `["research"]` is a different feature — it filters ordinary web search to research-affiliated websites (the list includes PubMed, bioRxiv, medRxiv, arXiv, and publisher sites) and returns page results from them, without querying the paper records in this index.

# Firecrawl Research Index

Find the research papers that answer a research query. Some questions have a single answer; many have several — and when in doubt, lean toward returning the fuller relevant set (most relevant first) rather than narrowing to one. A reader is better served seeing the neighboring methods and papers than having them silently dropped.

## What is in the index

Paper abstracts, with full text reachable per paper. The largest share of the corpus is **biomedical and life-science** literature — **PubMed** journal articles plus **bioRxiv** and **medRxiv** preprints — so clinical, drug, gene, disease, epidemiology, and public-health questions are in scope. **arXiv** preprints cover computer science, physics, and mathematics. Coverage outside those sources is thinner: a paper that exists only behind a publisher paywall or in a niche venue may not be indexed, and the general web tools below are the fallback when it isn't.
