## What it does

\`deriveTools()` converts controllers, RPC modules, and OpenAPI mixins into an array of `StandardToolV0` tools. Standalone tools can join that array; the `standard-tool` package also provides `standardTool()` for input and output validation.

The input schema keeps `body`, `query`, and `params` in separate nested fields, so calls must pass an object with those keys. Use `@operation.tool()` to customize a procedure’s name and description; setting `hidden: true` leaves it out of the generated tools. Controllers run through `.fn()` without HTTP, while RPC modules and mixins make HTTP calls. For RPC modules and mixins, schema validation checks the request envelope; values are validated during execution. That difference matters when choosing which module type to expose.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill tools -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tools/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tools/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill tools -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tools/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill tools -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tools/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install finom/vovk tools
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tools/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill tools -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/finom/vovk --path skills/tools
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tools/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill tools -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/finom/vovk/tree/HEAD/skills/tools/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn Vovk.ts procedures into model-callable tools
- add a standalone tool around a third-party SDK
- exclude a procedure from the generated tool list
- pass body, query, and params through a tool input schema

## Example prompts
- Turn this controller’s procedures into tools with `deriveTools()`.
- Add a standalone tool for my third-party SDK and include it in the `StandardToolV0` array.
- Keep this procedure out of the tool list with `@operation.tool()`.

# Vovk.ts LLM tools

**`deriveTools({ modules })`** turns existing procedures (controllers, RPC modules, OpenAPI mixins) into tools automatically. It returns an **array** of tools, each satisfying [`StandardToolV0`](https://standard-tool.js.org/) — `{ name, title?, description, inputSchema?, outputSchema?, execute }`.

Standalone tools (no procedure backing — SDK wrappers, calculators, file ops) are plain objects of the same shape; the `standard-tool` package's `standardTool()` helper adds input/output validation. Both mix freely in one array and feed to OpenAI / Anthropic / Vercel AI SDK / MCP servers.

> **v4 removed `createTool`, `VovkTool`, `parameters`, `type` and `inputSchemas`.** Tools are the standard-tool shape now: one merged `inputSchema` instead of `parameters` + `inputSchemas`, and `deriveTools` returns the array directly instead of `{ tools, toolsByName }`.

**Out of scope:** procedure authoring (**`procedure`**), `@operation` for OpenAPI docs (**`openapi`**), third-party OpenAPI mixin setup (**`mixins`**). MCP server transport / hosting outside Vovk; **for Next.js, use `createMcpHandler` from the official MCP SDK (`@modelcontextprotocol/server`)** — example below.

> **Import path note.** Code samples import from `'@/client'`: the composed client generated into `src/client` (or `client/` when the app isn't in `src/app`). Custom `composedClient.outDir` changes the path. With segmented client, import from `@/client/<segment>`. Call shape identical. See **`rpc`** skill.

## `deriveTools` — core shape

```ts
import { deriveTools } from 'vovk';
import { TaskRPC, PetstoreAPI } from '@/client';
import UserController from '@/modules/user/user-controller';
const tools = deriveTools({
  modules: { UserController, TaskRPC, PetstoreAPI },
});
```

`modules` accepts record of:

- **Controllers** — execute via `.fn()` in-process, no HTTP.
- **RPC modules** (from `@/client`, or `@/client/<segment>` for segmented layout) — execute via HTTP using standard fetcher.
- **OpenAPI mixins** (same client surface) — execute via HTTP against third-party API. See **`mixins`** skill.

Each module yields one tool per procedure with `@operation` schema, not `hidden`.
