## What it does

The skill inspects table statistics, indexes and query patterns, then scores tables for hypertable candidacy. It ships SQL you can run as-is: `pg_stat_user_tables` and `pg_total_relation_size` give insert, update and delete counts plus table size, `pg_indexes` surfaces indexes built on timestamp columns, and `pg_stat_statements` breaks down the expensive queries. There is a second route through code: the skill recognises append-only inserts into event or metric tables, time-filtered selects, and day-level aggregations.

Scoring decides the outcome. A table that reaches 8+ points counts as a good candidate. Sequential-ID tables get their own section — you can partition by ID when inserts dominate and updates touch only recent rows, the way an order moves from placed to delivered and then stops changing. For those, the skill suggests sparse indexes on the time column.

Prerequisites: PostgreSQL 15+ with TimescaleDB installed. Check your constraints before migrating. Primary and unique keys have to include the partition column, and hypertable→hypertable foreign keys are not supported, so that link needs rework. Once you have your shortlist, the companion `migrate-postgres-tables-to-hypertables` skill handles configuration and the migration itself.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill find-hypertable-candidates -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill find-hypertable-candidates -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill find-hypertable-candidates -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install timescale/pg-aiguide find-hypertable-candidates
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill find-hypertable-candidates -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/timescale/pg-aiguide --path skills/find-hypertable-candidates
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill find-hypertable-candidates -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/timescale/pg-aiguide/tree/HEAD/skills/find-hypertable-candidates/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- spot tables in a schema that would gain from hypertables
- separate an event log from a reference table you should leave alone
- measure the insert-to-update ratio for a table
- check whether indexes cover timestamp columns before migrating
- decide if a sequential-ID table can be partitioned

## Example prompts
- analyze the tables in my PostgreSQL database and tell me which ones should become hypertables
- look at the indexes and insert stats for the `orders` table — is it a fit for TimescaleDB?
- score the `events` and `metrics` tables and show me anything at 8 or above

  Use this skill to analyze an existing PostgreSQL database and identify which tables should be converted to Timescale/TimescaleDB hypertables.

  **Trigger when user asks to:**
  - Analyze database tables for hypertable conversion potential
  - Identify time-series or event tables in an existing schema
  - Evaluate if a table would benefit from Timescale/TimescaleDB
  - Audit PostgreSQL tables for migration to Timescale/TimescaleDB/TigerData
  - Score or rank tables for hypertable candidacy

  **Keywords:** hypertable candidate, table analysis, migration assessment, Timescale, TimescaleDB, time-series detection, insert-heavy tables, event logs, audit tables

  Provides SQL queries to analyze table statistics, index patterns, and query patterns. Includes scoring criteria (8+ points = good candidate) and pattern recognition for IoT, events, transactions, and sequential data.

# PostgreSQL Hypertable Candidate Analysis

Identify tables that would benefit from TimescaleDB hypertable conversion. After identification, use the companion "migrate-postgres-tables-to-hypertables" skill for configuration and migration.

## TimescaleDB Benefits

**Performance gains:** 90%+ compression, fast time-based queries, improved insert performance, efficient aggregations, continuous aggregates for materialization (dashboards, reports, analytics), automatic data management (retention, compression).

**Best for insert-heavy patterns:**

- Time-series data (sensors, metrics, monitoring)
- Event logs (user events, audit trails, application logs)
- Transaction records (orders, payments, financial)
- Sequential data (auto-incrementing IDs with timestamps)
- Append-only datasets (immutable records, historical)

**Requirements:** Large volumes (1M+ rows), time-based queries, infrequent updates

## Step 1: Database Schema Analysis

### Option A: From Database Connection

#### Table statistics and size

```sql
-- Get all tables with row counts and insert/update patterns
WITH table_stats AS (
    SELECT
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 09377b27942743a0 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
