## What it does

The skill lays out the order of work on a plan. It starts with a structured intake: household demographics, income and benefits, expenses, assets, liabilities, insurance, estate documents and the last few years of tax returns. Skip a category and the projections get shaky — that is where plans usually break.

Cash flow analysis comes next. Income sources get tagged by stability and tax treatment, the expense baseline is built from actual statements rather than guesses, and the savings rate is calculated. From there the skill covers accumulation and distribution modeling, Social Security claiming at 62, full retirement age and 70, pension integration, withdrawal sequencing and a Monte Carlo run over 1,000+ randomized return sequences. Results are framed as a confidence range, not one deterministic number.

This is advisor-side work with a client, not personal budgeting. If you need data flows between planning tools, capital market assumption governance, or a link from planning software to CRM or PMS, that is a different skill: financial-planning-integration. Install with `npx skills add` and the flag for your agent.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill financial-planning-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/financial-planning-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill financial-planning-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill financial-planning-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JoelLewis/finance_skills financial-planning-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill financial-planning-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills --path plugins/advisory-practice/skills/financial-planning-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill financial-planning-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/advisory-practice/skills/financial-planning-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- gather a complete client profile before any analysis starts
- calculate the savings rate and surface a cash flow deficit
- compare Social Security claiming at 62, at full retirement age and at 70
- stress-test the plan with a Monte Carlo probability of success
- sequence withdrawals and find the low-income window for a Roth conversion

## Example prompts
- Help me assemble a comprehensive financial plan for a client — start with the data checklist
- Model retirement and run a Monte Carlo probability of success
- Should this client do a Roth conversion in the years between retirement and RMDs?

description: "Orchestrate the advisor workflow for assembling and delivering a comprehensive financial plan — data gathering, cash flow analysis, retirement modeling, Monte Carlo analysis, Roth conversion and withdrawal sequencing, Social Security claiming strategy, education and estate goals, scenario modeling, and prioritized recommendations. Use when the user asks about building a financial plan, structuring a planning engagement, retirement or Social Security modeling, Roth conversion strategy, scenario analysis, prioritizing competing recommendations, preparing a plan presentation, or deciding when a plan needs updating. Also trigger on 'comprehensive financial plan', 'discovery meeting', 'retirement modeling', 'Monte Carlo', 'Roth conversion', 'Social Security claiming', 'savings rate', or 'is my client on track'. # Financial Planning Workflow

## Core Concepts

### Client Profile and Data Gathering
The financial plan begins with a structured intake that captures the client's complete financial picture. Incomplete data leads to unreliable projections and missed planning opportunities. The advisor should collect the following categories systematically before any analysis begins:

**Household demographics** — ages, marital status, dependents (ages and expected years of financial support), health status and family longevity history, employment status and expected retirement dates, state of residence (for state tax modeling).

**Income and benefits** — gross salary, bonuses, commissions, self-employment income, rental income, pension details (defined benefit formula, COLA, survivor options), Social Security statements for both spouses, deferred compensation schedules, stock option or RSU vesting schedules.
```
