# financial-metrics-analysis

This skill pulls year-over-year growth for income statement lines through Octagon MCP and returns it as a table. Useful when you need to compare revenue, COGS and net income across fiscal periods.

## What it does

The skill sits on top of the Octagon MCP server. You give it a ticker, a record count and a period type (fiscal year or quarterly), and the agent calls the `octagon-agent` tool with a plain-language prompt. The result is a table of YoY percentages across five lines: Revenue Growth, Cost of Revenue Growth, Gross Profit Growth, Operating Income Growth and Net Income Growth. Data comes from `octagon-companies-agent` and `octagon-financials-agent`.

Octagon MCP has to be configured in your agent first. Without it the skill has nowhere to send the query and the call fails. Setup steps live in `references/mcp-setup.md` inside the skill.

There is guidance on reading the numbers: revenue versus net income divergence, operating leverage signals, margin compression. If Cost of Revenue outgrows Revenue, margins are shrinking, and that is worth checking against the cost side. A flip from negative to positive growth often marks a turnaround.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill financial-metrics-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill financial-metrics-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill financial-metrics-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OctagonAI/skills financial-metrics-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill financial-metrics-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/OctagonAI/skills --path skills/financial-metrics-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/financial-metrics-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill financial-metrics-analysis -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- compare revenue and net income growth over five years
- spot cost of revenue rising faster than revenue
- catch a swing from declining to growing profit
- read operating leverage from the gap between operating income and revenue
- build a YoY growth table for several tickers

## Example prompts
- Retrieve year-over-year growth in key income-statement items for AAPL, limited to 5 records and filtered by period FY
- Show quarterly revenue and net income growth for TSLA, limited to 8 records
- Compare operating income and revenue growth for MSFT, limited to 10 records, period FY

# Financial Metrics Analysis

Retrieve and analyze year-over-year growth in key income statement items for public companies using the Octagon MCP server.

## Prerequisites

Ensure Octagon MCP is configured in your AI agent (Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, etc.). See [references/mcp-setup.md](references/mcp-setup.md) for installation instructions.

## Workflow

### 1. Identify Analysis Parameters

Determine the following before querying:
- **Ticker**: Stock symbol (e.g., AAPL, MSFT, GOOGL)
- **Records**: Number of periods to retrieve (e.g., 5 years)
- **Period**: FY (fiscal year) or Q (quarterly)

### 2. Execute Query via Octagon MCP

Use the `octagon-agent` tool with a natural language prompt:

```
Retrieve year-over-year growth in key income-statement items for <TICKER>, limited to <N> records and filtered by period <FY|Q>.
```

**MCP Call Format:**

```json
{
  "server": "octagon-mcp",
  "toolName": "octagon-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Retrieve year-over-year growth in key income-statement items for AAPL, limited to 5 records and filtered by period FY"
  }
}
```

### 3. Expected Output

The agent returns a tabular response with YoY growth percentages:

| Year | Revenue Growth | Cost of Revenue Growth | Gross Profit Growth | Operating Income Growth | Net Income Growth |
|------|----------------|------------------------|---------------------|-------------------------|-------------------|
| 2024 | 2.0%           | 1.5%                   | 3.1%                | 5.2%                    | 4.8%              |
| 2023 | -2.8%          | -1.2%                  | -4.5%               | -8.1%                   | -10.2%            |
| ...  | ...            | ...                    | ...                 | ...                     | ...               |

**Data Sources**: octagon-companies-agent, octagon-financials-agent

### 4. Interpret Results

See [references/interpreting-results.md](references/interpreting-results.md) for guidance on:
- Reading growth percentages
- Identifying trends and inflection points
- Spotting operating leverage signals
- Comparing to industry benchmarks
