## What it does

You name your goals — a vacation, a down payment, a car — and give each one a target amount, a date, and a dedicated account or label. The skill then calculates the months left and the monthly savings required, and estimates progress from your transaction history.

Two Wilson tools do the work. `spending_summary` pulls income and expenses for the last 3 months to derive your current savings rate. `transaction_search` looks for deposits and earmarked transfers tied to a goal name or account over 6 months. The result is a dashboard with progress bars and an on-track flag. When the total required per month exceeds what you can actually put aside, the skill flags the shortfall and suggests pushing dates out, trimming targets, or raising income.

One catch worth knowing before you start: Wilson sees transaction activity, not account balances, so you have to supply the starting balance for every goal yourself. Run several goals through a single savings account and the skill cannot tell contributions apart unless your transfers carry descriptive memos. Separate accounts, or at least clear memo fields, save you a lot of guessing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill financial-goals -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/financial-goals/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/financial-goals/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill financial-goals -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/financial-goals/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill financial-goals -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/financial-goals/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openaccountant/skills financial-goals
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/financial-goals/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill financial-goals -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/openaccountant/skills --path personal/financial-goals
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/financial-goals/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill financial-goals -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- work out the monthly amount each goal needs
- see which goals are on track and which are slipping
- find deposits tied to one account over six months
- compare total goal obligations against your real savings rate
- order goals by deadline when some are fixed and some are flexible

## Example prompts
- Set up savings goals for a vacation and a down payment, and calculate the monthly amount for each
- Check my transactions to see how much I have saved toward the car
- Show the goals dashboard and tell me where I am behind schedule

# Financial Goals Tracker

## Overview
Helps you define specific savings goals (vacation, down payment, new car, etc.), calculates the required monthly savings for each, tracks progress from your transaction history, and alerts you when you are ahead or behind schedule.

## Wilson Tools Used
- `spending_summary` — determine current savings rate and available capacity for goals
- `transaction_search` — find deposits and transfers related to specific goals

## Workflow
1. Ask the user to define their goals. For each goal, collect: name, target amount, target date, and any dedicated savings account or label.
2. Run `spending_summary` for the last 3 months to calculate average monthly income and average monthly expenses. Derive the current monthly savings rate: `income - expenses`.
3. For each goal, calculate:
   - Months remaining: difference between today and target date
   - Required monthly savings: `(target amount - current progress) / months remaining`
4. Run `transaction_search` with `query: "<goal name> OR <account name>"` and `months: 6` for each goal to find related deposits or earmarked transfers.
5. Sum the deposits found to estimate current progress toward each goal.
6. Present a goals dashboard:

   ```
   FINANCIAL GOALS
   ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
   Vacation Fund
     Target: $3,000 by Dec 2026  |  Saved: $1,200 (40%)
     Required: $300/mo  |  On track: YES
     [████████░░░░░░░░░░░░] 40%
   Down Payment
     Target: $40,000 by Jun 2028  |  Saved: $12,000 (30%)
     Required: $1,120/mo  |  On track: NO (-$220/mo)
     [██████░░░░░░░░░░░░░░] 30%
   ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
   Total required: $1,420/mo  |  Available: $1,200/mo
   ```

7. If total required monthly savings exceeds available savings rate, flag the shortfall and suggest either extending timelines, reducing targets, or increasing income.
8. Prioritize goals by deadline and suggest an allocation order.

## Without Wilson
1. Open a spreadsheet and create columns: Goal Name, Target Amount, Target Date, Current Balance, Monthly Required.
