## What it does

The skill maps inputs that control file access, including `file`, `path`, `page`, `template`, and `download`. It covers checks for relative traversal, absolute paths, encoded variants, and filter bypasses across Linux and Windows targets. The workflow also describes how to assess exposure of configuration files, credentials, source code, and other server data.

Its process combines browser developer tools with Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP and `cURL`. For repeatable checks, it uses wordlists with `ffuf` or `wfuzz`. The expected output is a vulnerability report, proof of file access, an impact assessment, and remediation guidance.

The work assumes knowledge of HTTP requests, filesystem layouts, web application architecture, and file APIs. Automated testing requires wordlists plus `ffuf` or `wfuzz`; without one of those tools, the automated phase described here cannot be run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill file-path-traversal -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/file-path-traversal/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill file-path-traversal -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill file-path-traversal -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zebbern/claude-code-guide file-path-traversal
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill file-path-traversal -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide --path skills/file-path-traversal
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill file-path-traversal -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide/tree/HEAD/skills/file-path-traversal/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map inputs that control file access
- test whether a request can leave the web root
- check template and document endpoints for LFI
- assess exposure of configuration files and keys
- write a remediation-focused vulnerability report

## Example prompts
- Test this web application for path traversal and map every parameter that may read a file.
- Use `ffuf` to check the `filename` parameter and report responses that indicate file access.
- Prepare a finding for the LFI: entry point, readable file, impact, and remediation.

# File Path Traversal Testing

## Purpose

Identify and exploit file path traversal (directory traversal) vulnerabilities that allow attackers to read arbitrary files on the server, potentially including sensitive configuration files, credentials, and source code. This vulnerability occurs when user-controllable input is passed to filesystem APIs without proper validation.

## Prerequisites

### Required Tools
- Web browser with developer tools
- Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP
- cURL for testing payloads
- Wordlists for automation
- ffuf or wfuzz for fuzzing

### Required Knowledge
- HTTP request/response structure
- Linux and Windows filesystem layout
- Web application architecture
- Basic understanding of file APIs

## Outputs and Deliverables

1. **Vulnerability Report** - Identified traversal points and severity
2. **Exploitation Proof** - Extracted file contents
3. **Impact Assessment** - Accessible files and data exposure
4. **Remediation Guidance** - Secure coding recommendations

## Core Workflow

### Phase 1: Understanding Path Traversal

Path traversal occurs when applications use user input to construct file paths:

```php
// Vulnerable PHP code example
$template = "blue.php";
if (isset($_COOKIE['template']) && !empty($_COOKIE['template'])) {
    $template = $_COOKIE['template'];
}
include("/home/user/templates/" . $template);
```

Attack principle:
- `../` sequence moves up one directory
- Chain multiple sequences to reach root
- Access files outside intended directory

Impact:
- **Confidentiality** - Read sensitive files
- **Integrity** - Write/modify files (in some cases)
- **Availability** - Delete files (in some cases)
- **Code Execution** - If combined with file upload or log poisoning

### Phase 2: Identifying Traversal Points

Map application for potential file operations:

```bash
# Parameters that often handle files
?file=
?path=
?page=
?template=
?filename=
?doc=
?document=
?folder=
?dir=
?include=
?src=
?source=
?content=
?view=
?download=
?load=
?read=
?retrieve=
```

Common vulnerable functionality:
- Image loading: `/image?filename=23.jpg`
- Template selection: `?template=blue.php`
- File downloads: `/download?file=report.pdf`
- Document viewers: `/view?doc=manual.pdf`
- Include mechanisms: `?page=about`

### Phase 3: Basic Exploitation Techniques
