## What it does

The skill lays out three stages. First the Story Bible: genre, logline, protagonist with want and wound, antagonist, world rules, theme. Then chapters — scene planning, beat brainstorming, curation, drafting, revision. Finally a fresh sub-agent reads the manuscript without the Story Bible and reports whether the plot and motivations come through.

Five editorial personas sit inside. Ask for the lens you need in the prompt: "As developmental editor..." for plot and pacing, "As line editor..." for prose rhythm, "As character consultant..." for voice and arc, "As continuity tracker..." for timeline and world facts, "Brainstorm mode..." for ideas. Each persona has its own file under `references/`, and loading them all at once burns context. Revisions go through `str_replace` instead of reprinting the chapter.

The model keeps no memory between sessions, so `story-bible.md` is the persistent state. At the start the skill reads it plus recent notes in `sessions/`; at the end it writes a short summary to `sessions/YYYY-MM-DD_topic-slug.md`. When the premise or world rules change, the Story Bible gets updated right away. Flash fiction and single scenes under 2000 words are out of scope, and so are poetry, screenplays and non-fiction — narrative non-fiction has its own `narrative-nonfiction` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill fiction-workshop -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/fiction-workshop/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill fiction-workshop -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill fiction-workshop -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rhavekost/author-toolkit fiction-workshop
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill fiction-workshop -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rhavekost/author-toolkit --path skills/fiction-workshop
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rhavekost/author-toolkit --skill fiction-workshop -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rhavekost/author-toolkit/tree/HEAD/skills/fiction-workshop/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a Story Bible before drafting
- spot a plot hole during a developmental pass
- keep a character's voice consistent across chapters
- catch timeline and world-fact contradictions
- test a chapter on a reader with no author context

## Example prompts
- Read story-bible.md and list the open questions from last session
- As developmental editor, review the pacing of chapter three and tell me where it drags
- Brainstorm mode: give me opening hooks for a scene set in a coffee shop

# Fiction Workshop

Editorial workflow for collaborative fiction writing in three stages: Story Bible Building, Chapter Development, and Reader Testing.

## Session Continuity

Novel projects span weeks or months. Claude has no memory between sessions, so the Story Bible is your persistent state.

- **At session start:** Read `story-bible.md` (or whatever the project calls it) before doing any other work. Skim recent files in `sessions/` for unresolved threads.
- **At session end:** Write a brief note at `sessions/YYYY-MM-DD_topic-slug.md` summarizing what was done, decisions made, and the stopping point. Two to five sentences is enough.
- **When foundations shift:** Update the Story Bible immediately when premise, character bios, world rules, or major plot turns change. The Story Bible is the source of truth, not a one-time template.
- **Surface unresolved questions:** At the start of new work, list questions left open from prior sessions and ask the user which to address before continuing.

## When to Use

This skill is for:
- ✅ Long-form fiction (novels, novellas, short story collections)
- ✅ Multi-chapter manuscripts requiring character/plot consistency
- ✅ Fiction projects needing developmental or line editing
- ✅ Stories with complex worldbuilding or multiple POV characters

## When NOT to Use

This skill is NOT for:
- ❌ Flash fiction or single scenes (< 2000 words) - too lightweight for the workflow
- ❌ Poetry or experimental prose - needs different editorial approach
- ❌ Screenplays or stage plays - different format conventions
- ❌ Technical writing, documentation, or academic papers
- ❌ Business writing or marketing copy

For narrative nonfiction (memoir, self-help with story elements), use the `narrative-nonfiction` skill instead.

## Editorial Personas

Personas are primarily for Stage 2 (Chapter Development) and Stage 3 (Reader Testing); Stage 1 is freeform Story Bible building that does not require persona invocation. Switch between these roles by requesting a specific lens:

| Role | Invocation | Focus |
|------|------------|-------|
