# fedramp-compliance

A skill for teams taking a cloud service through FedRAMP: it maps impact levels and NIST 800-53 control families to what you have to implement.

## What it does

The skill walks the FedRAMP path from picking an impact level to continuous monitoring and a 3PAO audit. It ships as reference tables the agent reads when you ask about controls.

Impact levels come in three tiers. Low covers roughly 125 controls for publicly releasable data with no PII, moderate about 325 for CUI and PII, high about 425 for life-safety and critical infrastructure systems. Each tier lists its authorization path: FedRAMP Tailored or standard Low, agency or JAB P-ATO, and JAB P-ATO only for high.

The rest is NIST 800-53 control families with key controls and implementation notes — AC, AU, CM, IA, IR, SC, SI and more. Those notes point at specific services: CloudTrail and CloudWatch Logs for audit, AWS Config and SSM for baseline configuration, FIPS 140-2 for cryptography. Run on another cloud and you remap all of it yourself. One note worth catching early: federal incidents are reported to US-CERT within 1 hour.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill fedramp-compliance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/fedramp-compliance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/fedramp-compliance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill fedramp-compliance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/fedramp-compliance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill fedramp-compliance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/fedramp-compliance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills fedramp-compliance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/fedramp-compliance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill fedramp-compliance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path compliance/frameworks/fedramp-compliance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/fedramp-compliance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill fedramp-compliance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- pick the right FedRAMP impact level for a service
- build the NIST 800-53 control set for that level
- set up continuous monitoring (ConMon)
- track open items in a POA&M
- get ready for a 3PAO assessment

## Example prompts
- Determine the FedRAMP impact level for our case management service and list the controls we need
- Draft a POA&M entry for control AC-2 in our service
- Which NIST 800-53 controls cover audit logging, and how do we implement them on AWS?

# FedRAMP Compliance

Implement FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) requirements for cloud service providers serving US federal agencies.

## When to Use

- Pursuing FedRAMP authorization for a cloud service offering
- Implementing NIST 800-53 security controls for federal workloads
- Establishing continuous monitoring (ConMon) processes
- Managing Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M) tracking
- Preparing for a Third-Party Assessment Organization (3PAO) audit
- Operating a FedRAMP-authorized system and maintaining authorization

## Impact Levels

```yaml
impact_levels:
  low:
    control_count: ~125
    use_case: "Publicly available federal information"
    examples:
      - Public-facing websites with no sensitive data
      - Open data portals
      - Marketing and informational systems
    data_types: "No PII, no CUI, publicly releasable only"
    authorization_path: "FedRAMP Tailored (Li-SaaS) or standard Low"
  moderate:
    control_count: ~325
    use_case: "Most federal systems, including CUI"
    examples:
      - Email and collaboration platforms
      - Case management systems
      - Financial management systems
      - HR and personnel systems
    data_types: "CUI, PII, law enforcement sensitive (LES)"
    authorization_path: "Agency or JAB P-ATO"
    note: "~80% of FedRAMP authorizations are at Moderate"
  high:
    control_count: ~425
    use_case: "High-impact federal systems"
    examples:
      - Law enforcement and criminal justice systems
      - Emergency services and public safety
      - Financial systems with significant impact
      - Healthcare systems with PHI
    data_types: "Classified-adjacent, life-safety, critical infrastructure"
    authorization_path: "JAB P-ATO required"
```

## NIST 800-53 Control Families

```yaml
control_families:
  AC:
    name: "Access Control"
    key_controls:
      AC-2: "Account Management - manage system accounts lifecycle"
      AC-3: "Access Enforcement - enforce approved authorizations"
      AC-6: "Least Privilege - employ principle of least privilege"
      AC-17: "Remote Access - establish usage restrictions for remote access"
    implementation_notes: "Map to IAM policies, RBAC, MFA enforcement"
