# feature-engineering

Builds features from market data for ML trading models: price, volume, microstructure, on-chain. Useful when a model trained on raw candles keeps overfitting.

## What it does

The skill walks through feature construction by category: price, volume, technical, microstructure, on-chain, cross-asset and time. Each entry comes with a formula and a lookback window. `log_return` is the log ratio of consecutive closes, `volume_ratio` compares bar volume to a 20-bar mean, `bb_position` places the close inside Bollinger Bands. Technical indicators come from `pandas-ta`.

Stationarity gets its own section. Test a feature with ADF, then turn non-stationary series into ratios, differences or rates of change: price into log returns, volume into a ratio to its average, OBV into a regression slope. Normalize with rolling statistics only, since a full-sample mean leaks future information. Microstructure features need trade-level data, on-chain features need Helius or Solana RPC.

Input is OHLCV candles plus trade flows for crypto and Solana tokens. Compute a z-score over the whole sample instead of a 60-bar window and the model sees the future: backtest metrics look fine, live results do not. Worth checking before you train anything.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill feature-engineering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/feature-engineering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/feature-engineering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill feature-engineering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/feature-engineering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill feature-engineering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/feature-engineering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

gemini skills install https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --path skills/feature-engineering
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/feature-engineering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill feature-engineering -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/feature-engineering/SKILL.md
## When to use it
- turn raw OHLCV candles into stationary features
- compute momentum, volatility and close position within the bar
- add volume features and spot price-volume divergence
- describe trade microstructure: size, trader count, entropy
- encode hour and weekday with sin/cos so midnight stays continuous
## Example prompts
- build features from OHLCV for a signal classification model on Solana tokens
- run ADF on my features and convert the non-stationary ones into ratios
- compute a rolling z-score over a 60-bar window, no full-sample stats
# Feature Engineering for Trading ML
Feature engineering is the single highest-leverage activity in building ML trading
models. Model selection (XGBoost vs. neural net vs. logistic regression) matters far
less than the quality and diversity of input features. A simple model on great
features will outperform a complex model on raw prices every time.
This skill covers constructing, validating, and selecting features from market data
for use in classification (signal-classification) and regression models targeting
crypto/Solana token trading.
## Why Features Beat Models
Raw OHLCV data is non-stationary, noisy, and high-dimensional. Models trained
directly on price series will overfit. Feature engineering transforms raw data into
stationary, informative signals that capture distinct aspects of market behavior:
- **Compression**: Reduce thousands of price bars to dozens of descriptive statistics
- **Stationarity**: Convert non-stationary prices into stationary returns and ratios
- **Domain knowledge**: Encode trader intuition (support/resistance, volume climax)
  as computable quantities
- **Regime awareness**: Features that behave differently in trending vs. ranging
  markets help models adapt
## Feature Categories
### 1. Price Features
Derived purely from OHLCV price columns. These capture trend, momentum, and
volatility from the price series itself.
| Feature | Formula | Lookback |
|---------|---------|----------|
| `log_return` | `ln(close_t / close_{t-1})` | 1 bar |
| `abs_return` | `abs(log_return)` | 1 bar |
| `return_volatility` | `std(log_return, N)` | 20 bars |
| `momentum_N` | `close_t / close_{t-N} - 1` | 5, 10, 20 |
| `acceleration` | `momentum_5 - momentum_5[5]` | 10 bars |
| `high_low_range` | `(high - low) / close` | 1 bar |
| `close_position` | `(close - low) / (high - low)` | 1 bar |
| `gap` | `open_t / close_{t-1} - 1` | 1 bar |
| `rolling_skew` | `skew(log_return, N)` | 20 bars |
| `rolling_kurtosis` | `kurtosis(log_return, N)` | 20 bars |
### 2. Volume Features
Volume confirms or contradicts price movements. Divergences between price and
volume are among the most reliable signals in short-term trading.
| Feature | Formula | Lookback |
|---------|---------|----------|
