# fact-checker

The skill pulls verifiable claims out of a document, checks them against official sources and proposes corrections. Useful when versions, numbers or model specs in your text have gone stale.

## What it does

The workflow runs in steps. First it scans the document for checkable statements: technical specs, version numbers and release dates, statistics, API limits, benchmark scores. Opinions, explanatory prose and tutorial steps get skipped.

Then it searches official sources — announcement pages, API docs, GitHub releases, package registries, research papers — and compares each claim against what it finds. Every claim gets a status: accurate, incorrect, outdated or unverifiable. You get a report with a comparison table, the source link and the reasoning behind each fix.

Nothing is edited until you approve. The skill shows the report and waits for an explicit yes, then applies the changes and reminds you to commit. When sources disagree, it favours the most recent official documentation and flags the conflict for you to decide. Web search is required, so in an environment without network access the check will not run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill fact-checker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/fact-checker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/fact-checker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill fact-checker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/fact-checker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill fact-checker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/fact-checker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills fact-checker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/fact-checker/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill fact-checker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path fact-checker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/fact-checker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill fact-checker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/fact-checker/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch outdated model and library versions in a draft
- check claimed API limits against official docs
- spot wrong statistics before publishing
- separate verifiable claims from opinions
- update the file and remember to commit

## Example prompts
- fact-check docs/overview.md
- verify the model specs in section 2.1 against official docs
- check whether the numbers in this file are still accurate

# Fact Checker

Verify factual claims in documents and propose corrections backed by authoritative sources.

## When to use

Trigger when users request:
- "Fact-check this document"
- "Verify these AI model specifications"
- "Check if this information is still accurate"
- "Update outdated data in this file"
- "Validate the claims in this section"

## Workflow

Copy this checklist to track progress:

```
Fact-checking Progress:
- [ ] Step 1: Identify factual claims
- [ ] Step 2: Search authoritative sources
- [ ] Step 3: Compare claims against sources
- [ ] Step 4: Generate correction report
- [ ] Step 5: Apply corrections with user approval
```

### Step 1: Identify factual claims

Scan the document for verifiable statements:

**Target claim types:**
- Technical specifications (context windows, pricing, features)
- Version numbers and release dates
- Statistical data and metrics
- API capabilities and limitations
- Benchmark scores and performance data

**Skip subjective content:**
- Opinions and recommendations
- Explanatory prose
- Tutorial instructions
- Architectural discussions

### Step 2: Search authoritative sources

For each claim, search official sources:

**AI models:**
- Official announcement pages (anthropic.com/news, openai.com/index, blog.google)
- API documentation (platform.claude.com/docs, platform.openai.com/docs)
- Developer guides and release notes

**Technical libraries:**
- Official documentation sites
- GitHub repositories (releases, README)
- Package registries (npm, PyPI, crates.io)

**General claims:**
- Academic papers and research
- Government statistics
- Industry standards bodies

**Search strategy:**
- Use model names + specification (e.g., "Claude Opus 4.5 context window")
- Include current year for recent information
- Verify from multiple sources when possible

### Step 3: Compare claims against sources

Create a comparison table:

| Claim in Document | Source Information | Status | Authoritative Source |
|-------------------|-------------------|--------|---------------------|
| Claude 3.5 Sonnet: 200K tokens | Claude Sonnet 4.5: 200K tokens | ❌ Outdated model name | platform.claude.com/docs |
| GPT-4o: 128K tokens | GPT-5.2: 400K tokens | ❌ Incorrect version & spec | openai.com/index/gpt-5-2 |

**Status codes:**
- ✅ Accurate - claim matches sources
- ❌ Incorrect - claim contradicts sources
- ⚠️ Outdated - claim was true but superseded
- ❓ Unverifiable - no authoritative source found
