# extension-points

This skill maps how MSBuild discovers hooks and imports: CustomBefore/CustomAfter, wildcard directories, NuGet auto-imports. Useful when assets go missing or get replaced.

## What it does

The skill covers MSBuild extension points — how SDKs, NuGet packages, repos and users inject custom logic into a build. It walks through `CustomBefore*` and `CustomAfter*` hooks, wildcard import directories, control properties such as `ImportDirectoryBuildProps` and `ImportProjectExtensionProps`, and the `build/` versus `buildTransitive/` layout inside a package.

One section explains why a source-tree import can point at a file that does not exist. Packing reshapes the layout: `<file src=… target=…>` mappings in `.nuspec` fan one shared file out into per-TFM targets. When `build/` is packed per-TFM and `buildMultiTargeting/` is not, a `buildTransitive/<tfm>/` forwarder must keep the TFM segment, or transitive consumers fail with `MSB4019`. Derive that segment from the file's own folder, not `$(TargetFramework)`: NuGet nearest-match can hand a `net10.0` consumer the `net9.0` folder.

The skill is not for a focused verdict on whether one `Import` needs `Exists()`, and not for Inputs/Outputs, incremental skipping or `FileWrites` tracking. Those belong to `msbuild-antipatterns`, `incremental-build` and `target-authoring`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill extension-points -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/extension-points/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/extension-points/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill extension-points -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/extension-points/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill extension-points -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/extension-points/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills extension-points
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/extension-points/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill extension-points -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/extension-points
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/extension-points/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill extension-points -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- work out why a CustomBefore hook never fires on another machine
- find which wildcard directory pulls in an extra .props file
- match a build/ file name to the package ID
- fix MSB4019 for a transitive consumer after per-TFM packing
- see how the packed .nupkg layout differs from the source tree

## Example prompts
- why is my CustomAfter hook not running during the build?
- the buildTransitive forwarder in my package fails with MSB4019 — trace it
- which control property disables the NuGet props auto-import from obj/?

An import guard remains in scope when it is one defect in a broader hook/import flow. DO NOT USE for a focused safety verdict on whether one specific Import needs Exists or is an intentionally unguarded package contract; use msbuild-antipatterns. # MSBuild Extension Points

How the MSBuild pipeline provides hooks for SDKs, NuGet packages, repos, and users to inject custom logic.

## CustomBefore / CustomAfter Hooks

Every major `.targets` file defines import hooks:

```xml
<PropertyGroup>
  <CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets Condition="'$(CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets)' == ''">
    $(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\v$(MSBuildToolsVersion)\Custom.Before.Microsoft.Common.targets
  </CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets>
</PropertyGroup>
<Import Project="$(CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets)"
    Condition="'$(CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets)' != '' and Exists('$(CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets)')"/>
<!-- ... core targets ... -->
<Import Project="$(CustomAfterMicrosoftCommonTargets)"
    Condition="'$(CustomAfterMicrosoftCommonTargets)' != '' and Exists('$(CustomAfterMicrosoftCommonTargets)')"/>
```

### Rules

- Default path includes version (`v$(MSBuildToolsVersion)`) for side-by-side installations.
- Always check `Exists()`. The file may not be present on every machine.
- **Append** to the property (don't overwrite) to chain multiple hooks:

```xml
<PropertyGroup>
  <CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets>
    $(CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets);$(MSBuildThisFileDirectory)MyExtension.targets
  </CustomBeforeMicrosoftCommonTargets>
</PropertyGroup>
```

## Wildcard Import Directories

MSBuild imports all files in extension directories, sorted alphabetically:

```xml
<Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\$(MSBuildToolsVersion)\Imports\Microsoft.Common.props\ImportBefore\*"
    Condition="'$(ImportByWildcardBeforeMicrosoftCommonProps)' == 'true'
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 79074111824eb48f tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
