# extension-inference

The skill spells out the only supported way to wire an LLM into a Caffeine app: the caffeineai-inference-client package with Config.fromEnv, no user-pasted key.

## What it does

Load this skill when a Caffeine app needs a chat, a summary or a classification step powered by an LLM. It covers the default route: Caffeine Inference, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint that the platform hosts, authenticates and bills for. The canister pulls its credentials at runtime, so nobody pastes a key and the app never stores or returns one.

The recipe is Motoko backend work. Add `caffeineai-inference-client@0.2.0` to `mops.toml`; Mops ≥ 2.13 is required. Config comes from `fromEnv`, and `is_replicated = ?false` is already set — do not override it. A replicated outcall sends the bearer from every replica, multiplies inference spend by subnet size, and breaks consensus because LLM bodies are sampled. The model is always `"router"`: the platform sizes each request to the query, so a model dropdown has nothing to offer.

Hand-rolling `ic.http_request` to `inference.caffeine.ai` or `api.openai.com` is treated as a forbidden anti-pattern here. Chat completions (`POST /v1/chat/completions`) are the whole API surface; embeddings, images, audio and the rest are absent. If the spec explicitly demands a pasted `sk-...` key against `api.openai.com`, reach for `extension-openai` instead. And do not swallow the `fromEnv` trap: pre-checking environment variables or returning an empty string in place of an error makes a broken call look like a working feature.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill extension-inference -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/extension-inference/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill extension-inference -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill extension-inference -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install caffeinelabs/skills extension-inference
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill extension-inference -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills --path skills/extension-inference
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill extension-inference -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/extension-inference/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add an LLM to a Caffeine app without asking the user for a key
- wire `caffeineai-inference-client` into `mops.toml` and read config from the environment
- call chat completions from a Motoko canister
- avoid paying for inference once per replica
- decide when `extension-openai` is the right skill instead

## Example prompts
- Add an LLM chat to this Caffeine app using Caffeine Inference: pull in `caffeineai-inference-client` and call `ChatApi.createChatCompletion`.
- Write a backend function that summarises text with `model = "router"`, and skip any model picker.
- Check my code for direct `ic.http_request` calls to `inference.caffeine.ai`.

# Caffeine Inference
LLM extension for [Caffeine AI](https://caffeine.ai?utm_source=caffeine-skill&utm_medium=referral).

## Orchestrator routing notes

Treat “use an LLM / GPT / chatbot / summarise with AI” as a first-class
platform feature. The default path is **Caffeine Inference**: an
OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint that Caffeine hosts, authenticates, and bills
for the app. The canister gets its credentials from the platform at runtime;
nobody pastes an API key, and the app never stores or returns one.

| User intent | Capability |
| --- | --- |
| Chat / summarise / classify with an LLM in a Caffeine app | `caffeineai-inference-client` `ChatApi.createChatCompletion` via this skill |
| Call `api.openai.com` with a user-pasted `sk-...` | [`extension-openai`](../extension-openai/SKILL.md) only |

Do **not** load `extension-openai` for a normal Caffeine-app LLM. Do **not**
ask the user for an OpenAI API key. Do **not** add `setApiKey` endpoints, a
key-settings page, or a model picker.

# Backend

## 1. Add `caffeineai-inference-client` to `mops.toml`

```bash
mops add caffeineai-inference-client@0.2.0
```

Requires Mops ≥ 2.13. **Minimum version:** `caffeineai-inference-client ≥ 0.2.0`.

## 2. Config comes from the platform
