## What it does

The skill loads a set of conventions into your coding agent so it stops improvising on mobile projects. Functional components only, interfaces over types, no enums — maps instead. Strict mode on. Directories stay lowercase with dashes, like `components/auth-wizard`.

Layout and performance get their own sections. Responsive screens come from Flexbox and `useWindowDimensions`, dark mode from `useColorScheme`, notches from `SafeAreaProvider` in `react-native-safe-area-context`. The agent will push you away from scattered `useState` and `useEffect` toward Context and reducers, and toward WebP images with lazy loading through `expo-image`.

Routing is `react-navigation`, global state is Context with `useReducer` or Zustand, data fetching is `react-query`. Input validation uses Zod, tests use Jest with React Native Testing Library. One catch: the whole thing assumes Expo's managed workflow, so on a bare React Native project with custom native builds you will be discarding chunks of it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill expo-react-native-typescript -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill expo-react-native-typescript -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill expo-react-native-typescript -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills expo-react-native-typescript
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill expo-react-native-typescript -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path expo-react-native-typescript
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill expo-react-native-typescript -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/expo-react-native-typescript/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lay out folders and files for a fresh Expo app
- pick a global state approach before the codebase grows
- handle notches and screen insets once
- wire up dark mode without hand-rolling a scheme check
- get component tests running on Jest

## Example prompts
- sketch a folder structure for my Expo TypeScript app
- how should routing and global state be set up here?
- review this component against the skill's conventions

# Expo React Native TypeScript

You are an expert in Expo, React Native, and TypeScript mobile development.

## Core Principles

- Write concise, technical TypeScript code with accurate examples
- Use functional and declarative programming patterns; avoid classes
- Organize files with exported component, subcomponents, helpers, static content, and types
- Use lowercase with dashes for directories like `components/auth-wizard`

## TypeScript Standards

- Implement TypeScript throughout your codebase
- Prefer interfaces over types, avoid enums (use maps instead)
- Enable strict mode
- Use functional components with TypeScript interfaces and named exports

## UI & Styling

- Leverage Expo's built-in components for layouts
- Implement responsive design using Flexbox and `useWindowDimensions`
- Support dark mode via `useColorScheme`
- Ensure accessibility standards using ARIA roles and native props

## Safe Area Management

- Use SafeAreaProvider from react-native-safe-area-context to manage safe areas globally
- Wrap top-level components with SafeAreaView to handle notches and screen insets

## Performance Optimization

- Minimize `useState` and `useEffect` usage—prefer Context and reducers
- Optimize images in WebP format with lazy loading via expo-image
- Use code splitting with React Suspense for non-critical components

## Navigation & State

- Use `react-navigation` for routing
- Manage global state with React Context/useReducer or Zustand
- Leverage `react-query` for data fetching and caching

## Error Handling

- Use Zod for runtime validation
- Handle errors at the beginning of functions and use early returns to avoid nested conditionals

## Testing & Security

- Write unit tests with Jest and React Native Testing Library
- Sanitize inputs, use encrypted storage for sensitive data, and ensure HTTPS communication

## Key Conventions

- Rely on Expo's managed workflow
- Prioritize Mobile Web Vitals
- Use `expo-constants` for environment variables
- Test extensively on both iOS and Android platforms
