## What it does

The skill walks you through Session-Based Test Management. A one-sentence charter names the target, the resources and the question the session should answer. You get charter templates, a minute-by-minute session flow, an environment prep checklist and a debrief template.

For bug hunting there are the HICCUPS and FEW HICCUPS heuristics — lenses for looking at the app, not a checklist to grind through. Boundary and "what if" question banks, note-taking templates and a section on turning findings into automated tests come with them.

Keep a session inside 45–90 minutes; past that, fatigue cuts into what you actually catch. The skill is not for an AI browser agent exploring the app from a natural-language goal — that is `agentic-browser-testing` — and not for testing your own LLM features, which is `ai-system-testing`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill exploratory-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/exploratory-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill exploratory-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill exploratory-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills exploratory-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill exploratory-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/exploratory-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill exploratory-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/exploratory-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a charter for a new feature and surface requirement gaps
- turn a vague "sometimes slow" report into exact reproduction steps
- check an area for regressions at integration points after a change
- log a session so the report stands in for a test script
- convert a manually found bug into an automated test

## Example prompts
- Help me write a charter for an exploratory session on the new checkout screen
- Run the debrief: what did we find and which bugs should become automated tests?
- Which HICCUPS heuristics should I apply to the search form?

  Design and execute structured exploratory testing sessions. Covers Session-Based
  Test Management (SBTM), charter writing, heuristic-based exploration (HICCUPS,

<objective>
Structured exploration that finds bugs scripted tests miss. Exploratory testing is simultaneous learning, test design, and execution -- the tester adapts in real time based on what the application reveals. This skill provides the frameworks to make that exploration systematic, repeatable, and documentable.

## Quick Route

Match the situation to a charter pattern and the reference section to open.

| Situation | Charter pattern | Open in references |
|-----------|-----------------|--------------------|
| **New feature** — learn it, find requirement gaps | "Explore [feature] with various roles/data to discover requirement gaps and unexpected behaviors" | Charter examples + session flow in `session-templates.md`; boundary/"what if" banks in `heuristics-and-automation.md` |
| **Regression** — a change just landed | "Explore [area] after [change] to discover regressions at integration points" | State-transition heuristics in `heuristics-and-automation.md` |
| **Bug investigation** — vague report ("sometimes slow") | "Explore [area] with [reported conditions] to discover exact reproduction steps" | Session flow + session-log template in `session-templates.md`; error-handling heuristics in `heuristics-and-automation.md` |

Full time splits for each row are in **Session Planning by Context** below.

## Discovery Questions

Before designing a session, gather context. Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first -- if it exists, use it as the foundation and skip questions already answered there.

### Target Area

- What feature, module, or flow is the exploration target?
- Is this a new feature (discovery mode) or existing feature (regression mode)?
- What is the most recent change to this area?
- Are there known risk areas or previous bug clusters here? (See `risk-based-testing` for risk data.)

### Hypotheses and Suspicions

- What do you think might break? (Hunches are valid starting points.)
