## What it does

The skill enforces an order: reproduce the baseline first, tune hyperparameters next, validate your method after that, and finish with an ablation study. Every stage carries an attempt budget and a gate condition — metrics have to land in the right range before you move on. Artifacts go to `/experiments/stageN_name/`.

Inside a stage it repeats a five-step loop: state a hypothesis, run it, log the result, compare against expectations, revise the plan. When results diverge, it hands off to `experiment-craft` for a five-step diagnostic. Before entering the pipeline it reads experiment memory at `/memory/experiment-memory.md` and picks one strategy that matches the current domain.

The budgets are not decoration: 20 attempts for the baseline, 12 for tuning, 12 for the method, 18 for ablation. It advises switching to `experiment-craft` if the first five attempts show a gap above 10%. Debugging one specific failure or deciding which experiments to run at all is out of scope here — that is `experiment-craft` and `paper-planning` territory.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill experiment-pipeline -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/experiment-pipeline/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/experiment-pipeline/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill experiment-pipeline -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/experiment-pipeline/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill experiment-pipeline -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/experiment-pipeline/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install EvoScientist/EvoSkills experiment-pipeline
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/experiment-pipeline/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill experiment-pipeline -a gemini-cli
2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoSkills --path skills/experiment-pipeline
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/experiment-pipeline/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill experiment-pipeline -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
## When to use it
- reproduce a paper baseline and check metrics against reported values
- tune hyperparameters for your hardware and framework version
- validate a new method against a tuned baseline across three runs
- build an ablation study that evidences each component's contribution
- stop brute-force retries when results refuse to converge
## Example prompts
- Help me reproduce the baseline from this paper — I have the code, metrics are off by 8%
- Move on to hyperparameter tuning, I need a stable config with variance under 5% across three runs
- Validate my method against the baseline and log the results into stage3
# Experiment Pipeline
A structured 4-stage framework for executing research experiments from initial implementation through ablation study, with attempt budgets and gate conditions that prevent wasted effort. This follows the Experiment Tree Search design from the EvoScientist paper, where the engineer agent iteratively generates executable code, runs experiments, and records structured execution results at each stage.
## When to Use This Skill
- User has a planned experiment and needs to organize the execution workflow
- User wants to systematically validate a novel method against baselines
- User asks about experiment stages, attempt budgets, or when to move on
- User needs to reproduce baseline results before testing their method
- User mentions "experiment pipeline", "baseline first", "ablation study", "stage budget", "experiment execution"
## The Pipeline Mindset
**Experiments fail for two reasons: wrong order and no stopping criteria.** Most researchers jump straight to testing their novel method without verifying their baseline setup, then wonder why results don't make sense. Others spend weeks tuning hyperparameters without a budget, hoping the next run will work.
The 4-stage pipeline solves both problems. It enforces a strict order (each stage validates assumptions the next stage depends on) and assigns attempt budgets (forcing systematic thinking over brute-force iteration).
