# excel-automation

Generates styled Excel reports using openpyxl, extracts data from large xlsm models with stdlib zipfile, and drives Excel on macOS. Handy for financial modeling and rebuilding paper forms.

## What it does

The skill handles Excel authoring and analysis through targeted Python scripts and AppleScript. For reports and mockups, it writes workbooks via `openpyxl` using investment banking color standards: blue for user inputs, black for formulas, and green for external sheet references.

When workbooks exceed 1MB, contain VBA macros, or crash `openpyxl` with corrupted defined names, it bypasses third-party parsers. The skill unzips the workbook directly, reading `xl/workbook.xml` and sheet XML via standard Python `zipfile` and `xml.etree.ElementTree`.

Window manipulation via `osascript` is restricted to macOS and requires explicit execution timeouts to prevent hanging. The provided workflows also expect the `uv` tool runner to execute scripts and manage dependencies like `openpyxl`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill excel-automation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/excel-automation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/excel-automation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill excel-automation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/excel-automation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill excel-automation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/excel-automation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills excel-automation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/excel-automation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill excel-automation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-docs/excel-automation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/excel-automation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill excel-automation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- Build financial models in Excel with standard investment banking color coding
- Parse corrupted or heavy `.xlsm` workbooks when openpyxl fails
- Convert scanned paper forms into printable, editable XLSX workbooks
- Control sheet selection and zoom in Excel on macOS via AppleScript

## Example prompts
- Generate a formatted valuation report in output.xlsx with standard banking colors
- Extract the DCF sheet from model.xlsm using the low-level zipfile parser
- Convert this paper form scan into an editable XLSX file with print layout

# Excel Automation

Create professional Excel files, parse complex financial models, and control Excel on macOS.

For an image or scan of a paper form that needs editable cells and a printable
layout, load [Printable forms](references/printable-forms.md) before creating the
workbook. Follow the host's designated spreadsheet authoring tool; use the
openpyxl examples below only when that tool is permitted.

## Quick Start

Before a command brings Excel forward or changes its visible window, check user
activity and other agents' occupancy. Use only foreground operations covered by
the current task's authorization. If the surface is in use, occupancy is unknown,
or unexpected input occurs, stop input and continue independent background work.

```bash
# Create a formatted Excel report
uv run --with openpyxl scripts/create_formatted_excel.py output.xlsx
# Parse a complex xlsm that openpyxl can't handle
uv run scripts/parse_complex_excel.py model.xlsm              # List sheets
uv run scripts/parse_complex_excel.py model.xlsm "DCF"        # Extract a sheet
uv run scripts/parse_complex_excel.py model.xlsm --fix        # Fix corrupted names
# Control Excel via AppleScript (with timeout to prevent hangs)
timeout 5 osascript -e 'tell application "Microsoft Excel" to activate'
```

## Overview

| Capability | Tool | When to Use |
|-----------|------|-------------|
| **Create** formatted Excel | `openpyxl` | Reports, mockups, dashboards |
| **Parse** complex xlsm/xlsx | `zipfile` + `xml.etree` | Financial models, VBA workbooks, >1MB files |
| **Control** Excel window | AppleScript (`osascript`) | Zoom, scroll, select cells programmatically |

## Tool Selection Decision Tree

```
Is the file simple (data export, no VBA, <1MB)?
├─ YES → openpyxl or pandas
└─ NO
   ├─ Is it .xlsm or from investment bank / >1MB?
   │   └─ YES → zipfile + xml.etree.ElementTree (stdlib)
   └─ Is it truly .xls (BIFF format)?
       └─ YES → xlrd
```

**Signals of "complex" Excel**: file >1MB, `.xlsm` extension, from investment bank/broker, contains VBA macros.

**IMPORTANT**: Always run `file <path>` first — extensions lie. A `.xls` file may actually be a ZIP-based xlsx.

## Creating Excel Files (openpyxl)

### Professional Color Convention (Investment Banking Standard)

Apply these colors to financial reports using that convention. For a paper form,
