This skill calls Exa Search through cURL or raw HTTP. Use it when an agent needs semantic web retrieval, domain filters, fresh page content, or structured results.

## What it does

exa-search sends requests to `POST https://api.exa.ai/search` without an SDK. An agent can choose the search mode, result count, category, domains, publication dates, and user location. Search types range from `auto` to `deep`.

Options under `contents` add page text, highlights, summaries, freshness controls, live crawling, linked subpages, and extracted links. The response can follow an `outputSchema`, or arrive as an SSE stream when streaming is enabled.

An Exa API key must be available through `EXA_API_KEY`; without the `x-api-key` header, authentication fails. When the agent already has a URL and only needs its contents, the skill points to `POST /contents` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add exa-labs/agent-skills --skill exa-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/exa-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add exa-labs/agent-skills --skill exa-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add exa-labs/agent-skills --skill exa-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install exa-labs/agent-skills exa-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add exa-labs/agent-skills --skill exa-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/exa-labs/agent-skills --path skills/exa-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add exa-labs/agent-skills --skill exa-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/exa-labs/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/exa-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- search the web with a semantic query
- restrict results to selected domains
- return page text or query highlights
- filter results by publication dates
- shape output with a JSON schema

## Example prompts
- Use `exa-search` to find recent material on the topic and keep results from `reuters.com` only.
- Run `exa-search` against API documentation and extract the `body` section from the matching pages.
- Use a deep Exa search for this question and return the answer in the requested JSON schema.

# Exa Search

> Requires API key: Get one at https://dashboard.exa.ai/api-keys
>
> Header: `x-api-key: $EXA_API_KEY`

Use `POST https://api.exa.ai/search` for semantic web retrieval, ranked results, and optional result-level extraction in one raw HTTP call. Start with `type: "auto"` for general retrieval. Add `contents` only when the caller needs page text, highlights, summaries, freshness-controlled crawling, subpages, or extracted links.

## Quick Start (cURL)

### Basic search

```bash
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.exa.ai/search" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-key: $EXA_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "query": "latest developments in LLMs",
    "type": "auto",
    "numResults": 10
  }'
```

### Search with highlights

```bash
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.exa.ai/search" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-key: $EXA_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "query": "latest developments in LLMs",
    "type": "auto",
    "numResults": 5,
    "contents": {
      "highlights": true
    }
  }'
```

### With filters and freshness

```bash
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.exa.ai/search" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-key: $EXA_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "query": "AI regulation policy updates",
    "type": "auto",
    "category": "news",
    "numResults": 10,
    "includeDomains": ["reuters.com", "bbc.com"],
    "startPublishedDate": "2025-01-01",
    "contents": {
      "text": {
        "maxCharacters": 2000
      },
      "maxAgeHours": 24,
      "livecrawlTimeout": 12000
    }
  }'
```

### Deep search

```bash
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.exa.ai/search" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "x-api-key: $EXA_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "query": "map the major technical and commercial tradeoffs in sodium-ion batteries for grid storage",
    "type": "deep",
    "numResults": 8
  }'
```

## Endpoint

```text
POST https://api.exa.ai/search
```

Authentication: `x-api-key: <API_KEY>` header. Exa also accepts `Authorization: Bearer <API_KEY>`, but prefer `x-api-key` in cURL examples for consistency.

Use this endpoint when the agent needs search results. If the agent already has URLs and only needs extraction, use `POST /contents` instead.

## Parameters

### Core request parameters

| Parameter | Type | Required | Default | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `query` | string | Yes | - | Natural-language search query. Long, semantically rich descriptions work well. |
| `type` | string | No | `auto` | Search method: `auto`, `fast`, `instant`, `deep-lite`, `deep`, or `deep-reasoning`. |
| `numResults` | integer | No | `10` | Number of results to return. Use small values for agent loops; maximum is 100. |
