# paper-writing

Runs an 11-step workflow for academic papers, from the pipeline figure sketch to final revisions. Useful when you need a draft of the Introduction or Method, not a finished manuscript.

## What it does

The skill lays out paper writing as a sequence: sketch the pipeline figure first, then design the story and experiment plan, then draft Method, Introduction, Experiments, Related Work, Abstract and Conclusion. Each step comes with section-specific templates — three Abstract versions, four ways to introduce the task, a Method structure that covers module design, motivation and technical advantages.

A separate set of seven counterintuitive rules shapes the prose. Underclaim in the text and let tables and figures carry the strength. State one real limitation early, because a controlled admission lowers reviewer suspicion. Show one failure case with a diagnosis. For the Introduction there is an explicit anti-pattern: never frame it as a naive baseline followed by your improvement, since that reads as incremental work.

The skill uses `write_file`, `edit_file`, `read_file` and `think_tool`. If you already ran `paper-planning` and `experiment-pipeline`, it pulls their artifacts: the story summary, module motivation mapping, experiment plan, stage results and ablation tables. Pre-submission review lives in `paper-review`, experiment execution in `experiment-pipeline`, story design in `paper-planning` — this skill does not cover those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill paper-writing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/paper-writing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill paper-writing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill paper-writing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install EvoScientist/EvoSkills paper-writing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill paper-writing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoSkills --path skills/paper-writing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill paper-writing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoSkills/tree/HEAD/skills/paper-writing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft an Introduction as task → prior methods → contribution
- write Method subsections with motivation for each module
- plan comparison experiments and ablations to back your claims
- compose an Abstract from one of three templates
- tone down claims so the tables carry the evidence

## Example prompts
- write the Introduction for our paper using the paper-writing templates
- draft the Method section with module motivation and technical advantages
- help me plan the experiments and ablation tables

# Paper Writing

A systematic 11-step workflow for writing academic papers, with section-specific templates and battle-tested writing principles.

## When to Use This Skill

- User asks to write or draft a paper or paper section
- User needs LaTeX templates for Abstract, Introduction, Method, Experiments, etc.
- User wants to improve academic writing quality
- User mentions "paper writing", "write introduction", "draft method section", etc.

## Artifact Sources

If you used upstream EvoSkills, pull these artifacts before writing:

| Source Skill | Artifact | Used In |
|-------------|----------|---------|
| `paper-planning` | Story summary (task → challenge → insight → contribution → advantage) | Step 2 (Introduction writing plan) |
| `paper-planning` | Module Motivation Mapping table | Step 3 (Method subsections) |
| `paper-planning` | Experiment plan (comparisons + ablations + demos) | Step 5 (Experiments section) |
| `paper-planning` | Pipeline figure sketch | Steps 1, 6 (Method overview figure) |
| `paper-planning` | Claim-to-experiment mapping | Steps 2, 5, 9 (Introduction, Experiments, Abstract) |
| `paper-planning` | Fallback narrative (if planned) | Step 4 (Introduction pivot), Step 9 (Conclusion) |
| `experiment-pipeline` | Stage 1-4 results, ablation tables, trajectory logs | Step 5 (write experiments) |
| `experiment-craft` | Failure analysis, implementation tricks | Step 3 (Method section / Supplementary), Step 9 (Conclusion limitations) |

## The 11-Step Writing Process

Follow these steps in order. Each step builds on the previous one.
