## What it does

The skill runs two stores. Ideation Memory (`/memory/ideation-memory.md`) tracks research directions — feasible ones and dead ends, each with a note on why it failed. Experimentation Memory (`/memory/experiment-memory.md`) holds reusable strategies: data processing, model training, architecture, debugging. Every entry carries context, evidence from a specific cycle, and a date.

Three mechanisms write into them. IDE reads the outcome of research-ideation and pulls directions out of the tournament results. IVE fires after a failed experiment and splits the cause into an implementation mistake or a fundamental limit. ESE runs after a success and extracts a strategy you can apply again. For IDE the skill uses a ready prompt from `references/paper-prompts.md`, filling in the research goal and the top ideas from `/direction-summary.md`.

Directions then get abstracted to a transferable level: a narrow phrasing about feature selection for point clouds turns into a general trick for sparse data. The skill writes and edits memory files, so run it once a cycle is actually closed — otherwise half-finished conclusions land in the store. It does not run experiments itself; that, code debugging and idea generation belong to other skills.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill evo-memory -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/evo-memory/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill evo-memory -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill evo-memory -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install EvoScientist/EvoSkills evo-memory
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill evo-memory -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoSkills --path skills/evo-memory
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EvoScientist/EvoSkills --skill evo-memory -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/EvoScientist/EvoSkills/tree/HEAD/skills/evo-memory/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- remember which research directions already failed and why
- tell an implementation bug apart from a fundamental limit of the method
- extract a reusable strategy from an experiment that worked
- load prior knowledge at the start of a new cycle
- stop repeating the same dead ends across projects

## Example prompts
- update memory after the research-ideation run, direction was real-time video compression
- the training run failed — classify it as implementation or fundamental failure
- what worked before for noisy sensor data preprocessing?

# Evo-Memory

A persistent learning layer that accumulates research knowledge across ideation and experimentation cycles. Maintains two memory stores and implements three evolution mechanisms that feed learned patterns back into future research.

## When to Use This Skill

- User has completed an `research-ideation` and needs to update Ideation Memory
- User has completed (or failed) an `experiment-pipeline` and needs to update memory
- User is starting a new research cycle and wants to load prior knowledge
- User asks about research memory, learned patterns, or cross-cycle knowledge
- User mentions "evo-memory", "update memory", "what worked before", "research history", "evolution"

## The Learning Layer

Research is iterative. Each cycle — from ideation through experimentation — generates knowledge that should inform the next cycle. Without persistent memory, every new project starts from scratch, repeating mistakes and rediscovering patterns.

Evo-memory solves this by maintaining two structured memory stores and three evolution mechanisms that extract, classify, and inject knowledge across cycles.

## Two Memory Stores

### Ideation Memory (M_I)

**Location**: `/memory/ideation-memory.md`

Records what you've learned about research DIRECTIONS — which areas are promising and which are dead ends.
