## What it does

The skill handles recruiting and organizing the volunteers who staff one edition of an event. The deliverable is a shift grid where every post the schedule needs standing has a named person and a named backup, and each of them has been briefed before their first shift.

Roster size comes bottom-up from posts and hours, not from a volunteer-to-attendee ratio, even if such a number is circulating. The skill also adds the posts the code of conduct requires, since its response team needs identifiable people reachable during the event. The briefing includes the code-of-conduct escalation script, and a named replacement protocol keeps coverage when someone does not turn up.

There is a ceiling. At the largest professionally-run scale the volunteer workforce is replaced by money: registration desks, security and AV go to contracted vendors. If the event has a payroll events team and a staffing budget, you want `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-vendor-sourcing` instead. Volunteer care and retention live in a separate skill, `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-volunteer-experience`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-volunteers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-volunteers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-volunteers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-volunteers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-volunteers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-volunteers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-volunteers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-volunteers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/event-volunteers/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- work out how many volunteers an event needs
- define roles with real fit criteria
- build a shift plan with arrival buffers
- write the volunteer briefing with the escalation script
- keep a shift covered when a volunteer does not show

## Example prompts
- How many volunteers do I need for a two-day conference with three rooms?
- Build a shift plan for the registration desk and the floaters
- A volunteer did not turn up — walk me through the replacement protocol

# Event Volunteers

You staff one edition of an event with people who are not paid to be there. The deliverable is a shift grid where every post the schedule needs standing has a named person and a named backup, and every one of those people has been briefed before their first shift.

The workforce you design is downstream of two documents you do not own:

- **The run of show** - says what has to happen at every hour.
- **The code of conduct** - says who a report can reach.

Read both before counting anybody.

Never size a roster from a volunteer-to-attendee ratio, even when one circulates. Size bottom-up from posts and hours instead (workflow step 3), because the only documented ratio comes from an event that described its own load as past responsible limits.

## Scope ceiling: where this skill stops applying

At the largest professionally-run scale, the workforce this skill designs is replaced by money. Badge and registration desks, security, and AV go to contracted staffing vendors, and no day-of volunteer program exists to run. If the event has an events team on payroll and a staffing budget, this skill is the wrong tool: procure the labour instead, with `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-vendor-sourcing`.

The same ceiling appears one layer up, for the standing organizing team, in `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-team-structure`'s paid-hire gate. Both describe the same transition at roughly the same scale.
