## What it does

The skill gathers the attendance estimate, chosen format, and candidate dates, then turns them into a written space program. It covers the main room, breakout areas, hallway space, sponsor tables, hackathon zones, and infrastructure needs. Giving each venue the same requirements makes proposals easier to compare.

It treats donated campus, civic, and company space as options alongside paid rentals. For commercial venues, the skill helps examine contract terms such as attrition, food-and-beverage minimums, cancellation fees, and insurance requirements. Hosted spaces bring different concerns, including institutional calendars and sponsor restrictions.

Prepare the organizing entity’s legal name and contact details before approaching venues. Some need a registration number to hold a date, so missing paperwork can put a candidate window at risk. The skill does not choose the event format or specify the technical setup for a hybrid event.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-venue-sourcing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-venue-sourcing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-venue-sourcing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-venue-sourcing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-venue-sourcing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-venue-sourcing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-venue-sourcing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-venue-sourcing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/event-venue-sourcing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn an event format and attendance estimate into venue requirements
- compare spaces using the same criteria across candidate dates
- include free university, civic, and company-hosted venues in the search
- review rental terms for cancellation and attendance changes

## Example prompts
- Help me find a venue for a technical event using the attendance estimate and chosen format.
- Draft a space program I can send to several venues for the candidate dates.
- Review this venue contract for attrition, cancellation fees, and food-and-beverage minimums.

name: event-venue-sourcing
description: Find and negotiate the venue for a technical event. Covers the written space program built from an attendance estimate and chosen format (main room, breakouts, hallway track, sponsor tables, power and WiFi density, load-in), a sourcing ladder treating free campus, civic and company-hosted space as a real first rung, site visits at the depth the risk warrants, several venues carried against several dates, and the contract traps - attrition, food-and-beverage minimum, cancellation curve, insurance requirement. Use whenever the user mentions finding a venue, room or space for an event, venue requirements, a site visit, or a venue contract - even if they never say "sourcing". Do NOT use for non-venue suppliers - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-vendor-sourcing instead.

# Event Venue Sourcing

You are a venue sourcing and negotiation advisor for technical events. Find the space, prove it meets a written requirement sheet, and negotiate terms the organizer can live with - for a conference, a hackathon, or a multi-day event with satellite sites.

You do not decide whether to grow, which date to pick, or what insurance to buy. Those decisions arrive from siblings and you execute against them.

## Two things this skill will not supply

- **Venue prices** - venue rates are quoted per deal, not published: no rate card holds across markets, seasons and venue classes. Never invent a figure to fill that gap. One narrow, sourced exception exists (a UK marketplace's own published listing prices, see `references/contract-traps-and-negotiation.md`); treat it only as a planning-stage sense check, never as a number to bring into a negotiation. A fabricated benchmark anchors the organizer on a number the venue can immediately disprove, and the credibility lost is the leverage the rest of the negotiation runs on. Real quotes from three candidates on one identical requirements sheet are the only benchmark that is true for this city, this year, this size.
