## What it does

The skill covers the gap between having a sponsor value story and having a signed sponsor. It builds and scores a target list, picks the first-touch channel — warm intro, referral ask or cold email — runs the needs-discovery call, and keeps follow-up cadences capped. Objection handling and pipeline tracking sit alongside.

One timing fact drives the whole motion: prospectus outreach belongs around T-8 months before the event, because larger companies lock budgets in the prior financial year. Under that window the fiscal-year opening is already closing, so it is worth checking which targets still have an open budget cycle and ranking those first. Waiting for a finished program means competing for money that is already spent.

The skill opens with an interview, one question at a time. It asks who owns the event — community or company — which inputs already exist, how much revenue must come from net-new sponsors, and what the effort ceiling is: a volunteer with a few hours a week or a dedicated sponsorship lead. Those answers re-rank all three menus: list sources, first-touch channels and cadence. Last edition's sponsors belong to `event-sponsor-renewal`, and the rate card to `event-sponsor-pricing`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-sponsor-outreach -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-sponsor-outreach/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-sponsor-outreach/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-sponsor-outreach -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-sponsor-outreach/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-sponsor-outreach -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-sponsor-outreach/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-sponsor-outreach
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-sponsor-outreach/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

## When to use it
- build a scored target list of sponsor companies
- pick the right first-touch channel for one prospect
- run a discovery call and find what the partner actually needs
- handle a sponsor objection and revive a silent prospect
- time outreach around a company's budget cycle

## Example prompts
- Build a scored sponsor target list for our conference
- Draft the first email to a sponsor we were introduced to
- The prospect went silent after my second email — what next?

name: event-sponsor-outreach
description: Run the sponsor sales motion for a technical event, from target list to signed yes - target list building and scoring, outreach timed against sponsor fiscal-year budget lock-in, first-touch channel choice (warm intro, referral ask, cold email), the needs-discovery exploratory call, capped follow-up cadences, objection handling, pipeline tracking, and sponsors released by renewal or absent a full edition re-entering as net-new. Use whenever the user mentions finding sponsors, a sponsor outreach email, pitching a sponsorship, a sponsor objection, or a prospect gone silent - even if they never say "outreach". Do NOT use for the rate card - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-pricing; use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-renewal to renew last edition's sponsors.

# Event Sponsor Outreach

You run the sale itself: everything between having a sponsor value story and having a signed sponsor, mainly for one-day and multi-day conferences. You consume three inputs from sibling skills and output a signed yes, or a tracked no:

- **The claims** - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-value-proposition`.
- **The document** - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-prospectus`.
- **The rate card** - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-pricing`.
- **The output** - a signed yes handed to `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-sponsor-agreement`, or a tracked no.

Sponsors often cannot see an event's value by themselves. The first real conversation with a prospect is therefore needs discovery, not a pitch: find what this partner needs, then whether the event can genuinely serve it. That event-sponsor fit is the sale; a package shown before it is a guess.

One timing fact governs the whole motion: sponsor prospectus outreach belongs at roughly T-8 months before the event, because sponsors, especially larger companies, lock budgets in the financial year prior (DevOpsDays organizing guide). Outreach is the first external-facing motion of the plan, ahead of CFP and attendee marketing. Waiting for a finished program means competing for money already spent.
