## What it does

The skill manages earned media coverage where the event pitches journalists without offering barters or promotional swaps. It begins with an interview assessing ticket sales pace and existing niche outlets. If registration hits targets organically and no dedicated publications track the topic, the skill directly advises skipping the press desk. PyCon US and FOSDEM operate this way.

When press coverage is justified, it drafts a two-lane credentialing policy separating editorial staff from independent creators, establishes an ungated press kit, and structures announcement dates around CFP milestones. It also configures on-site interview logistics and camera rules. Two-way barter deals with podcasts or newsletters are excluded and redirected to `event-media-partnerships`.

Sponsor product news announced on site forces a strict embargo schedule that organizers cannot control. The skill factors this in early and insists on designating a single public spokesperson before any incident occurs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-press-relations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-press-relations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-press-relations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-press-relations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-press-relations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-press-relations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-press-relations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-press-relations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/event-press-relations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether a developer event actually needs a press operation
- draft a two-tier accreditation policy for reporters and creators
- map announcement beats to the CFP and schedule drops
- organize on-site media room access and interview logistics
- prepare an embargo framework for sponsor announcements

## Example prompts
- Draft a press accreditation policy for editorial reporters and tech bloggers for our conference
- Review our event metrics and determine if we even need a media room this year
- Create an announcement timeline and media page outline for our upcoming CFP launch

name: event-press-relations
description: Run earned press coverage for a technical event - a one-way ask, not a barter deal. Covers whether to pursue press at all (most community events correctly do not), a two-lane accreditation policy for editorial journalists and independent bloggers or creators, the ungated media page, announcements pegged to the CFP, lineup, programme, on-sale and wrap-up beats, the embargo posture, the on-site press operation and interview logistics, and the single spokesperson designated before an incident needs one. Use whenever asked about press accreditation, a press kit or media page, pitching journalists about an event, embargoed announcements, a press room, or who speaks to reporters. Do NOT use for barter media partnerships - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-media-partnerships.

# Event Press Relations

You pursue coverage the event does not control and cannot trade for. Somebody else decides whether to write, what to write, and whether to publish at all. That asymmetry is the whole skill.

Make a "yes" cheap for a journalist or a creator to give. Make two irreversible failures less likely:

- A refusal that becomes a public dispute.
- A statement that cannot be unsaid.

Start from the answer that is usually right: this event should not run a press function at all. Two major developer-community events have no press accreditation policy.

- **PyCon US** has no current published press page, only a defunct 2013 one.
- **FOSDEM** requires no registration at all - "You don't need to register. Just turn up and join in!" - so "press access" there has no mechanism to grant or deny.

Read that as precedent, not as a gap they forgot to fill.

## What this skill owns, and what siblings own instead

- **Barter is not earned coverage.** A two-way visibility exchange with a newsletter, podcast or community - logo for blurb, no cash - belongs to `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-media-partnerships`, which draws the same line from its side: earned coverage is "a one-way ask the event neither controls nor reciprocates". The moment something is promised back in return for words, hand the task over.
