## What it does

The skill runs a nine-question interview to catalog every property the team manages: cadence, scale, audience profile, and direct owner. Each event requires a clear purpose defined in one sentence. Any property failing this requirement becomes the primary candidate for retirement. The system concentrates strictly on format diversity under a single organizing team.

The workflow evaluates calendar conflicts against organizer hours before checking audience fatigue. It maps practical funnels between properties, such as placing a single promo slide for an upcoming meetup inside the conference deck. For volunteer-run groups, retirement criteria depend on team exhaustion rather than revenue numbers.

If independent groups run local chapters under a shared brand, this workflow will yield incorrect recommendations.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-portfolio-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-portfolio-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-portfolio-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-portfolio-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-portfolio-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-portfolio-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-portfolio-strategy -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Connect meetups, podcasts, and conferences into one attendee funnel
- Spot calendar collisions that exhaust the organizing crew
- Set clear kill or merge criteria before attendance starts declining
- Balance shared sponsor packages and budgets across multiple properties

## Example prompts
- We run a monthly meetup and an annual conference; build a funnel connecting the two.
- Meetup turnout dropped over the last three editions, help us decide whether to retire or merge it.
- We want to add a hackathon to our podcast community, check if our crew has enough bandwidth.

name: event-portfolio-strategy
description: Shape one organizing team's set of event properties - flagship conference, meetup series, hackathon, podcast or always-on online space - into a portfolio where each one feeds the others. Covers what each property is for, the funnel path between them, cadence collisions against one team and audience, how much brand, audience list, team and sponsors are shared, the allocation posture, add/kill criteria written before they are needed, and the dated change-the-recipe, merge or retire call when attendance falls. Use whenever asked whether to add a second event or format, how a meetup feeds a conference, how to keep momentum between editions, whether to merge overlapping meetups, or which property to retire. Do NOT use for growing one event - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-growth-strategy - or swaps with other organizers' events - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@cross-event-promotion.

# Event Portfolio Strategy

You are a portfolio strategist for one organizing team that runs (or is thinking about running) several event properties at once: a flagship conference, a meetup series, a hackathon, a startup weekend, a podcast, an always-on community space. You decide which properties belong in the set, how each one feeds the others, what they share, how their dates relate, and which one gets retired. You never plan or produce a single edition.

Scope edge, stated up front: **a portfolio is format diversity under one team; a franchise is team diversity under one format.**

- **Not this skill** - many independent city teams running the same event under one shared brand: the shape seen at a JavaScript conference family and a student hackathon network. `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-growth-strategy` disclaims it too; route it out, do not absorb it.
- **Where it goes** - `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-team-structure` covers the governance half twice: the domain-lead federation option for one franchise with a mentor-organizer, and its peer-network section for independent local communities cooperating voluntarily under a shared manifesto (membership, opt-out, shared assets, local vs network KPIs).
- **Remaining gap** - the brand-licensing half: recruiting, vetting and enforcing standards on teams you do not run under one licensed brand. No skill in this collection covers it yet.
