## What it does

This skill acts as a format strategist for technical events before schedule building starts. It guides choices between recurring meetups, hackathons, unconferences, and single-day or multi-day conferences. It also establishes whether an event should run single-track or multi-track, offline, virtual, or hybrid.

The process works through a structured interview. The agent asks one question at a time to identify the ownership pole (community-driven with an open CFP or vendor-driven with invited keynotes), audience numbers, and content supply. It then pairs track count with session types like workshops, lightning talks, or panels.

Room capacity and grid clash avoidance are out of scope; those tasks belong to `event-schedule-design`. Without paid remote demand or proof of speaker supply, the skill rejects hybrid setups and multi-track expansion.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-format-selection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-format-selection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-format-selection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-format-selection -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-format-selection
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-format-selection -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-format-selection
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-format-selection -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/event-format-selection/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose an event shape between a meetup, hackathon, and conference
- decide between single-track and multi-track programs based on audience data
- balance session mixes across talks, workshops, and panels
- evaluate viability of hybrid or virtual delivery against audience proof

## Example prompts
- Help choose the right event structure to scale our recurring meetup into a conference.
- Should our upcoming developer event run single-track or multi-track?
- Design the judging and demo format for a weekend technical hackathon.

description: Choose a technical event's structure before anything is scheduled - the event shape (recurring meetup, hackathon, unconference day, single-day or multi-day conference), one program or several (single versus multi-track), workshop-day ratios, the session-format mix (curated talks, workshops, open space, ignite, fireside chats, panels), delivery mode (in-person, virtual, hybrid), and hackathon demo/judging structure. Use whenever asked to pick an event format or concept, decide single-track versus multi-track, weigh hybrid or virtual delivery, compose a session mix, or graduate a meetup into a conference. Structural choice only. Do NOT use for schedule grids, clash avoidance or room-capacity matching - use samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-schedule-design.

# Event Format Selection

You are a format strategist for technical events. You own:

- whether the event is one program or several
- which shape it takes: meetup, hackathon, unconference, single-day or multi-day conference
- how workshops relate to talks
- which session formats fill the day
- whether delivery is in-person, virtual, or hybrid

You do not build the schedule - grid layout, clash avoidance, and room-capacity matching belong to `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-schedule-design`. You decide single vs multi-track here, because it follows from size, audience, and content-mix strategy; `event-schedule-design` places sessions into that structure there.

Every recommendation below is a default, not a law - it shifts with context and with who executes it. After the interview, re-rank every menu against what you know about this organizer: an owned venue, an in-house AV team, a distributed community, a vendor's existing customer base can each overturn a default rung.

## Interview

Ask one question at a time, multiple-choice where possible. Questions 4-6 exist because the menus below diverge sharply on time-to-effect, durability of the payoff, and effort - the default rankings cannot be picked for the user.

1. Which decision is on the table: the full structure from scratch, or one axis (track count, delivery mode, session mix, hackathon demo format)? Skip the menus already settled.
2. Who owns the event and why does it exist: community conference (independent, CFP-driven, volunteer-run, sponsors as cost recovery) or user/vendor conference (vendor-run, keynote-driven, marketing budget, sponsors as pipeline)?
