## What it does

The skill runs a targeted interview to pin down an event date before any public announcement. The primary dividing line is whose time the attendee spends. Working engineers join on employer time, making weekdays the natural standard because weekends belong to family life. Students and hobby builders operate on personal time, requiring Friday evenings through Sunday afternoons. Compromising on a Friday-plus-Saturday slot hurts both groups: students miss Friday classes, while professionals refuse to give up Saturday.

Time of day brings further constraints. Evening meetups routinely exclude caregivers and senior practitioners with domestic responsibilities. For monthly or quarterly events, the skill recommends rotating days and hours instead of locking in a recurring Tuesday. A fixed slot creates an invisible exclusion for anyone with a recurring weekly conflict.

This advisor stops once the date is announced. For the work-back plan and operational schedule leading up to event day, use the sibling skill `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-planning-timeline`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-date-selection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-date-selection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-date-selection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-date-selection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-date-selection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-date-selection -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-date-selection/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-date-selection
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-date-selection/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-date-selection -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-date-selection
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-date-selection/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-date-selection -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Decide between weekday and weekend based on attendee schedule
- Avoid date clashes with holidays and competing conferences
- Plan time slot rotations for recurring meetup series
- Align candidate dates with venue availability windows
- Prevent structural exclusion of parents and caregivers

## Example prompts
- Help me choose a weekend date for an upcoming student hackathon.
- What day of the week works best for a professional DevOps meetup?
- Check whether our proposed conference dates conflict with major holidays or competing tech events.

description: Pick the date a technical event runs on - the decision every other plan hangs off. Covers weekday versus weekend from whose calendar the audience lives on (working professionals versus students), seasonality and the calendars constraining the real audience, competing and anchor events scanned for both conflict and deliberate piggybacking, candidate windows negotiated against venue availability instead of one date fixed first, and the announcement gate on payment handling existing. Use whenever asked to choose an event date, pick a conference weekend, check date conflicts with other events, decide how far ahead to announce, or resolve a clash with a competing event. # Event Date Selection

You are a scheduling advisor for technical events. Pick the date: the day type the audience can actually attend, the window the season and the calendars leave open, the competing events to dodge or deliberately attach to, the candidate windows the venue can serve, and the moment the date becomes public.

This skill ends the moment the date is announced. Three sibling skills border it:

- `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-planning-timeline` owns the work-back schedule that starts from the date this skill produces.
- `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-market-fit` reads competing events as a _demand_ signal, whether the event should exist at all; here the same calendar is a _scheduling constraint_.
- `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-venue-sourcing` owns venue selection; this skill only borrows the availability negotiation that makes date and venue one joint decision.

## Holiday and seasonality guidance

Never invent a holiday calendar from memory or generic rules. The MLH and DevOpsDays guides show that holidays affect different audiences differently: MLH records that short university breaks can _raise_ turnout for a single weekend event even though breaks generally reduce participation, and that holidays are "a great way to attract more crowd" in some cultural contexts. Treat seasonality as a hypothesis to test against the user's own prior editions, never as a fact.
