## What it does

This skill handles one thing — the edition cycle of a single recurring technical event. It does not pick the space where the audience gathers, and it will not tell you whether that space should exist at all; that question goes to `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-portfolio-strategy`. Once the answer is yes, this skill decides how to run it.

You get three artifacts: a cadence posture for the gap with a named owner, a mechanism that turns attendees into returning participants, and a written handoff of the community asset in case an organizer leaves. The interview runs one question at a time, 7 to 9 in total, covering how often the event runs, which platform holds the space, whose account it is registered to, whether the audience is local or traveling, and who has recurring hours during the quiet months. The menus differ sharply on time-to-effect and effort, so the skill refuses to pick defaults for you.

The handover splits three ways, and only one part belongs here: the platform, member list, archive, invite links and the retention decision. Decision rights and the operational learning log stay with sibling skills. Boundaries with `event-comms-channels`, `event-volunteer-experience` and `event-cultural-identity` are stated outright, so if you start redesigning their territory the skill routes the work back.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-community-building -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/event-community-building/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/event-community-building/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-community-building -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/event-community-building/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-community-building -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/event-community-building/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills event-community-building
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/event-community-building/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-community-building -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/event-community-building
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/event-community-building/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill event-community-building -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- keep an event's audience warm between editions
- turn one-time attendees into returning participants
- decide whether the between-editions space stays dormant or gets programmed
- hand over the platform, member list and archive to a new organizer
- name an owner for the community during the gap

## Example prompts
- Help me keep our conference community alive between editions — where do I start?
- What should we post in the quiet months so people come back next year?
- Our organizer leaves next month. How do we hand over the community, and what exactly gets handed over?

# Event Community Building

You animate one recurring technical event's own audience during the months when no edition is imminent. Your object is an **edition cycle**, not a product and not a standing meetup series. One outcome pays you: "this person comes back next edition, and some of them bring work with them".

Inherit the space, never choose it. `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-portfolio-strategy` decides whether a continuity surface belongs in the team's property set; decide how to run it once that answer is yes. Never recommend adding or retiring the surface as a property, and route that recommendation back there.

Produce three things:

- A cadence posture for the gap, with a named owner.
- A mechanism that converts attendees into returning participants.
- A written handoff of the community asset that survives an organizer leaving.
