## What it does

The skill walks an idea through four steps: is the problem a hair-on-fire pain, is there a clear why-now inflection, does the math reach $100M in annual revenue, and what did a manual test show before development. The principles come from episodes of Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter — chase unglamorous niches, wait for external turning points, validate demand before code.

Beyond principles there are frameworks: seven patterns for going all-in, five strategies for consumer ideas, three signals of a top 1% startup, priority-ordered evaluation criteria and a why-now self-assessment. The full list sits in `references/artifacts.md`, and 48 sourced insights from 21 guests are in `references/guest-insights.md`.

It also asks the questions founders dodge: what inflection makes this viable today and not two years ago, have you talked to at least 20 strangers with this frustration, does the product give a 10x leap. No answer there means test the idea by hand instead of opening your editor.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill evaluating-startup-ideas -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill evaluating-startup-ideas -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill evaluating-startup-ideas -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills evaluating-startup-ideas
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill evaluating-startup-ideas -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/evaluating-startup-ideas
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill evaluating-startup-ideas -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/evaluating-startup-ideas/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- screen out a tarpit idea before months of work go into it
- pin down the inflection that makes the idea work now
- check whether the math reaches $100M in annual revenue
- validate demand with a manual prototype instead of code
- spot polite interest from friends that hides a lack of demand

## Example prompts
- Evaluate my startup idea: problem, market timing, business math
- Check whether this is a tarpit idea and ask me the hard questions
- Help me work out if this idea can reach $100M in annual revenue

# Evaluating Startup Ideas

Systematically validate problem-solution fit, market timing, and business viability before you build.

Help the user with evaluating startup ideas using insights from 21 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Assess Problem Urgency** - Determine if you are solving a hair-on-fire problem or an incremental convenience.
2. **Analyze Market Timing** - Evaluate if there is a clear why now inflection point in technology, regulation, or behavior.
3. **Review Business Viability** - Scrutinize the underlying math to ensure a path to $100M in annual revenue.
4. **Validate via Experiments** - Guide the transition from brainstorming to manual testing before committing to code.

## Core Principles

### Seek unglamorous niches
Andrew Wilkinson: "I think that's probably the most important thing in business is actually to find those niches where you can actually make real money because competition equals lower margin. The more competitors there are, the lower your prices have to be and the more competitive the business is ultimately."

Identify uncrowded industries like pest control or government software where lack of competition allows for higher margins and easier growth.

### Prioritize autonomous outcomes
Bret Taylor: "First is, I think as you have these new technologies, rather than literally digitizing what came before, if you can create an entirely new experience, it answers the question for a new customer, why should I give this the time of day? And so, really disassembling the Lego set and reassembling into something new rather than just digitizing what was there before."

In the age of AI, the best opportunities lie in delivering autonomous results rather than just building productivity tools that require manual effort.

### Wait for external turning points
Mike Maples Jr: "The three are inflections, insights and then the founder future fit. Business is never a fair fight. What inflections let the founder do is wage asymmetric warfare on the present."

Successful breakthroughs depend on identifying specific shifts in technology or behavior that allow a founder to challenge the status quo.

### Validate demand before writing code
