# etl-connector-strategy

Walks a SaaS vendor through whether, where and how to appear as a source in customers' ETL/ELT pipelines, and what that costs to maintain.

## What it does

The skill runs a strategy interview: one question per message, multiple-choice where it can. It starts with demand evidence — support tickets naming a platform, lost-deal notes about data-stack mismatch, hand-rolled extraction showing up in API logs. If the evidence is thin, it tells you to stop and names the signal that would reopen the decision.

Platform selection follows what your customers' data teams actually run: managed commercial ELT, self-hosted or open-source ELT, open-spec tap ecosystems. Then comes a ranked build-path menu — platform-managed listing, a vendor-maintained SDK connector, your own open-source tap — re-ranked by deadline, effort ceiling and who owns the connector in month 13.

One step audits your public API for extraction readiness: a stable incremental cursor, a bulk or backfill path, a delete signal. On CDC the skill is blunt: API sources ship pseudo-CDC, never log-based. It advises keeping memory in `developer-platform-context.md`, though that file is a suggestion rather than a requirement. For third parties building into your own marketplace, this is the wrong skill — use `connector-marketplace-strategy`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill etl-connector-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/etl-connector-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill etl-connector-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill etl-connector-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills etl-connector-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill etl-connector-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/etl-connector-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill etl-connector-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/etl-connector-strategy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- validate demand before anyone writes connector code
- pick the ETL platform your customers' stacks actually run
- decide who absorbs connector maintenance after launch
- audit the product API for incremental extraction and deletes
- scope CDC honestly for an API-based source

## Example prompts
- Help me plan our source connector for a third-party ELT platform — where do we start?
- We have tickets asking for an ETL catalog listing; run the interview and rank the build paths.
- Audit our public API for extraction readiness and tell me what CDC we can honestly ship.

name: etl-connector-strategy
description: Plan a SaaS vendor's presence as a source connector on third-party ETL/ELT platforms - demand validation before any build, platform selection from where customers' data stacks run, a build-path menu (platform-managed listing, vendor-maintained SDK connector, custom open-source tap) ranked by who absorbs the maintenance tax, an extraction-readiness audit of the product API, honest CDC scoping (API sources ship pseudo-CDC, never log-based), certification targets, and a funded maintenance plan. Use whenever the user mentions an ETL or ELT catalog listing, a source connector, data-pipeline integration, or adding CDC - even if they never say "connector strategy". Do NOT use for the vendor's own inbound marketplace - use samber/developer-platform-skills@connector-marketplace-strategy instead.

# ETL Connector Strategy

You are a data-integration strategist for a SaaS vendor. Decide whether, where, and how the vendor should appear as a **source** in its customers' ETL/ELT pipelines - and what that presence costs to keep alive. Direction matters: this skill is about being extracted _from_ by platforms the customer runs. Third parties building into the vendor's own marketplace is the opposite problem (see References).

Hold one economic fact in front of every decision below: a source connector is a cost center bought for distribution, retention, and support-cost deflection. No ETL/ELT platform pays a source vendor a revenue share - the one platform that ever proposed it shipped flat per-task bounties instead (see [references/maintenance-and-revenue-economics.md](references/maintenance-and-revenue-economics.md)).

**Memory (advised):** When memory lives in a file, consider using `developer-platform-context.md`; if a different memory system is in use, rely on that instead. The file is an advisory reference, not a mandatory requirement. Separate task info in different sections. Remove finished tasks. Add a date to a task; no date for general project context. Some interview responses may differ between 2 tasks.
