## What it does

This skill gives your coding agent accurate pin mapping and hardware constraints for 30-pin NodeMCU boards using ESP-12E or ESP-12F modules. Silk markings on the PCB differ from real microcontroller GPIO lines: D1 maps to GPIO5, while D2 connects to GPIO4. Only 9 GPIO lines remain free for general use because six lines serve the integrated SPI flash bus.

The skill supplies working project setups for PlatformIO with Arduino core 3.1.2 under the `nodemcuv2` target. It documents strapping pins GPIO0, GPIO2 and GPIO15. If external hardware pulls D8/GPIO15 high toward 3V3 at power-on, the chip refuses to boot before any user code can run.

Because the board mounts a 26 MHz crystal, the ROM bootloader reports status at 74880 baud rather than 115200. D0/GPIO16 belongs to the RTC power domain, meaning standard timer interrupts and software PWM do not function on that pin.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp8266-nodemcu-30pin -a claude-code
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp8266-nodemcu-30pin -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp8266-nodemcu-30pin -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
### GitHub Copilot
1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alexex1993/mcu-skills esp8266-nodemcu-30pin
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin/SKILL.md`
### Gemini CLI
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp8266-nodemcu-30pin -a gemini-cli
```
2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills --path skills/esp8266/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp8266-nodemcu-30pin -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/esp8266/esp8266-nodemcu-30pin/SKILL.md
## When to use it
- configure platformio.ini for the nodemcuv2 target
- map board silkscreen pins D0–D10 to actual ESP8266 GPIOs
- diagnose boot loops by decoding ROM reset messages at 74880 baud
- prevent strapping pin conflicts on GPIO0, GPIO2 and GPIO15
## Example prompts
- Set up platformio.ini for an ESP8266 NodeMCU board using LittleFS
- Why does my NodeMCU fail to boot when a sensor is wired to D8?
- Show the GPIO pin mapping for NodeMCU pins D1 through D7
description: Firmware development for the 30-pin NodeMCU ESP8266 devkit — NodeMCU DevKit V1.0 / Amica (CP2102) and LoLin NodeMCU V3 (CH340G), built on the Ai-Thinker ESP-12E or ESP-12F module (ESP8266EX, 4 MB flash), with PlatformIO and the Arduino ESP8266 core (`board = nodemcuv2`). Use when working on a NodeMCU, ESP-12E, ESP-12F or ESP8266 devkit: project setup, platformio.ini, the D0-D10 vs GPIO numbering, which pins are safe and which break the boot, GPIO15/GPIO0/GPIO2 strapping, the A0 divider and 1 V ADC, software I2C and software PWM, analogWrite range, LittleFS and flash layouts, OTA, deep sleep and the missing GPIO16-to-RST link, Wi-Fi, heap exhaustion, watchdog and Soft WDT resets, exception decoding, flashing over CP2102/CH340, or debugging why the board does not boot, prints garbage, or reboots by itself.
# NodeMCU ESP8266 devkit — 30-pin
The board that made the ESP8266 usable: an Ai-Thinker ESP-12E/F module, a USB-UART
bridge, an LDO, two buttons, 15 pins a side. Everything hard about it is a pin with a
second job, a peripheral that is software rather than silicon, or a number that means
something different than it looks like.
Read `reference/board-hardware.md` before choosing pins. Most ESP8266 tutorials are
written for core 2.x and for a different board; several of their defaults are now wrong.
- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the board: full header map with D-number ↔ GPIO
  translation, the strapping resistors and their values, the two LEDs, the A0 divider,
  the auto-program circuit and its truth table, the power tree — **plus** a development
  guide (§9 toolchain and flash layouts, §10 flashing and recovery, §11 peripheral
  cookbook, §12 symptom → cause → fix table).
- `reference/esp8266-soc.md` — the silicon: the 17 GPIOs and which six are the flash
  bus, memory map and why a sketch cannot exceed ~1 MB, clocks, the ADC's two mutually
  exclusive modes, UART/SPI/HSPI/I2S pin tables, PWM as a timer service, sleep modes and
  their real currents.
- `reference/recipes.md` — code that compiles: `platformio.ini` variants, digital and
  analog IO, software I2C and its scanner, HSPI, LittleFS, Wi-Fi station with reconnect,
  ArduinoOTA, deep sleep with RTC memory, Ticker, WS2812 over I2S, and the watchdog and
  exception-decoder recipes.
- `template/` — a **project that builds clean and was run on hardware**, in two
  variants, plus a scaffold script. See `template/README.md`.
## Confirm the board first
All 30-pin NodeMCU boards share the module, the pin map and every rule below. Two things
differ, and both bite:
| | DevKit V1.0 / Amica ("V2") | LoLin NodeMCU V3 |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge | CP2102 (Silicon Labs VCP driver) | CH340G (WCH driver) |
```
