## What it does

The Freenove ESP32-S3-WROOM (FNK0085) and the AliExpress clones that copy its header share one layout: 20 pins per side, a 24-pin FPC connector for an OV2640 or OV3660, a microSD slot on SDMMC, a WS2812 and two USB-C sockets. Fourteen GPIO pads go to the camera, three more to the card, and three that are printed on the header and look free actually belong to the octal PSRAM. Seven pins are left. Most debugging on this board comes down to that count.

The skill ships reference files and a project template. `reference/board-hardware.md` holds the full 40-pin header table with alternate functions, the camera and SDMMC maps, the power tree, and a symptom-to-fix table. `reference/esp32s3-soc.md` covers the silicon: GPIOs that do not exist, strapping semantics, ADC1/ADC2, the LCD_CAM DVP controller. `reference/esp32-family.md` answers whether a different ESP32 fits, and `reference/recipes.md` collects code that compiles — `platformio.ini`, camera init and capture, SDMMC, an MJPEG web server, moving the console to native USB, I2C and SPI on pins that are actually free. `template/` gives a building project in two variants plus a scaffold script.

The expensive mistake is memory, not the camera.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp32s3-cam-40pin -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp32s3-cam-40pin -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp32s3-cam-40pin -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alexex1993/mcu-skills esp32s3-cam-40pin
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp32s3-cam-40pin -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills --path skills/esp32/esp32s3-cam-40pin
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill esp32s3-cam-40pin -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/esp32/esp32s3-cam-40pin/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a `platformio.ini` for an N8R8 or N16R8 module with octal PSRAM
- trace why `esp_camera_init()` returns `ESP_ERR_NO_MEM`
- find which GPIOs remain once camera and microSD are wired
- mount a microSD card over SDMMC in 1-bit mode
- decide between UART0 and native USB for the console

## Example prompts
- Set up a project for the 40-pin ESP32-S3 CAM with an OV2640 and frame capture to microSD
- The camera will not initialise and `psramFound()` is false — check `platformio.ini` and the memory type
- Which GPIOs are still free with the camera and microSD connected?

# ESP32-S3-WROOM CAM — 40-pin

Twenty pins a side, a DVP camera connector on the front, a microSD slot on the back, and
two USB-C sockets. The camera claims **fourteen** of the thirty-six GPIO pads, the card
claims three more, and the octal PSRAM claims three that are printed on the header and
look free. What is left is seven pins.

That arithmetic is the whole story of this board. It also means the Arduino defaults for
`Wire` and `SPI` land squarely on camera data lines, and that the single most common
failure — "the camera does not initialise" — is almost never the camera.

- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the board: the full 40-pin header table with every
  alternate function, the camera and SDMMC maps traced to the vendor's own code, the
  PSRAM and strapping pins, the two USB routes, the power tree, the flash/partition
  layout — **plus** a development guide (§8 toolchain, §9 platformio.ini, §10 flashing
  and recovery, §11 symptom → cause → fix table).
- `reference/esp32s3-soc.md` — the silicon: which GPIOs do not exist, strapping semantics
  from the datasheet's own tables, ADC1/ADC2 and touch maps, the LCD_CAM DVP controller,
  power-up glitches, memory map and PSRAM addressing, deep sleep and RTC wake pins.
- `reference/esp32-family.md` — the rest of the family, for "should this be a different
  ESP32?" questions: what does and does not port between chips, radio and USB capability
  per chip, the RMT generation table (WS2812 under Wi-Fi load), deep-sleep memory and
