## What it does

The skill shows how to expose a public POST handler with `//encore:api raw` and work directly with `http.ResponseWriter` and `*http.Request`. That access lets the handler keep the request body unchanged while checking a provider signature. Examples cover Stripe, GitHub, Slack, Shopify, and Twilio.

Signing secrets belong in a `secrets struct{...}` rather than in the handler source. Once an event passes verification, the endpoint can acknowledge it with `2xx` and publish the remaining work through Pub/Sub with `AtLeastOnce` delivery. A slow response can make the sender retry the webhook.

The skill separates raw integrations from typed JSON endpoints: use regular `//encore:api` for APIs owned by your service. Stripe uses `Stripe-Signature`; GitHub uses HMAC-SHA256 over the unchanged request body. The raw body must be available before parsing.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub, Slack, Stripe

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill encore-go-webhook -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-webhook -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-webhook/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-webhook/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-webhook -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-webhook/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-webhook -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-webhook/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install encoredev/skills go-webhook
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-webhook/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-webhook -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/encoredev/skills --path encore/go-webhook
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-webhook/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-webhook -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- receive Stripe or GitHub webhook POSTs
- check signatures on incoming events
- keep the raw HTTP request body
- acknowledge a verified webhook before slow work
- publish accepted events through Pub/Sub

## Example prompts
- Create an Encore Go Stripe webhook with `//encore:api public raw path=/webhooks/stripe method=POST` and validate `Stripe-Signature`.
- Add a GitHub webhook that checks `X-Hub-Signature-256` against the raw request body before handling the event.
- Move verified Stripe event processing to Pub/Sub and return `2xx` from the request handler first.

when_to_use: >-
  User mentions a webhook, a /webhooks/* path, raw HTTP, `//encore:api raw`, accepting external callbacks, verifying webhook signatures (Stripe-Signature, X-Hub-Signature-256), reading the raw request body, parsing form-encoded payloads, or any time the user names a third-party provider that posts events — Stripe, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Shopify, Twilio, SendGrid, Mailgun, Auth0, Clerk, Slack, Discord, PayPal, Square. Use `encore-go-api` instead for typed JSON endpoints in your own service. Trigger phrases: "Stripe webhook", "GitHub webhook", "/webhooks/stripe", "raw HTTP endpoint", "raw endpoint", "verify the signature", "inbound webhook", "external callback".

# Encore Go Webhook Endpoints

## Instructions

Use `//encore:api raw` to receive inbound webhooks from third-party services. Raw endpoints give you direct access to `http.ResponseWriter` and `*http.Request`, which you need for signature verification (the verification typically requires the unparsed raw body).

### 1. Define the endpoint with `//encore:api raw`

```go
package webhooks
import (
    "io"
    "net/http"
)
//encore:api public raw path=/webhooks/stripe method=POST
func StripeWebhook(w http.ResponseWriter, req *http.Request) {
    sig := req.Header.Get("Stripe-Signature")
    // Read the raw body — needed for signature verification.
    body, err := io.ReadAll(req.Body)
    if err != nil {
        http.Error(w, "could not read body", http.StatusBadRequest)
        return
    }
    // Verify signature, parse event, handle, then respond...
    w.Header().Set("Content-Type", "application/json")
    w.WriteHeader(http.StatusOK)
    w.Write([]byte(`{"received":true}`))
}
```

### 2. Verify the signature

Most providers sign webhooks. Read the secret with `secrets` (see the `encore-go-secret` skill) and verify before trusting the payload.

```go
package webhooks
import (
    "github.com/stripe/stripe-go/v76/webhook"
)
var secrets struct {
    StripeWebhookSecret string
}
//encore:api public raw path=/webhooks/stripe method=POST
func StripeWebhook(w http.ResponseWriter, req *http.Request) {
    body, _ := io.ReadAll(req.Body)
    sig := req.Header.Get("Stripe-Signature")
    event, err := webhook.ConstructEvent(body, sig, secrets.StripeWebhookSecret)
    if err != nil {
        http.Error(w, "signature verification failed", http.StatusBadRequest)
        return
    }
    // event is now trusted — handle it.
    _ = event
    w.WriteHeader(http.StatusOK)
}
```
