## What it does

The skill gives the agent patterns for Encore Go endpoints. A function carries the `//encore:api` annotation, and its inputs and outputs are structs tagged with `json`, `query`, `header` or `cookie`. Path segments such as `/users/:id` land in struct fields by name.

Annotation options are covered too: `public`, `private`, `auth`, `sensitive`, plus `method` and `path`. Error handling goes through `encore.dev/beta/errs` — `errs.NotFound` maps to 404, `errs.InvalidArgument` to 400, `errs.Unauthenticated` to 401. Two extra tags show up: `encore:"httpstatus"` for a custom status code and `encore:"sensitive"` for keeping fields out of traces.

Scope is typed JSON endpoints. Raw handlers (`//encore:api raw`) and inbound webhooks live in `encore-go-webhook`, not here. Params must be a pointer to a struct or omitted, the response a pointer to a struct, and `error` always comes last.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill encore-go-api -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-api -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-api/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-api/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-api -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-api/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-api -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-api/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install encoredev/skills go-api
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-api/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-api -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/encoredev/skills --path encore/go-api
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-api/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add encoredev/skills --skill go-api -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/encoredev/skills/tree/HEAD/encore/go-api/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a typed endpoint in a Go service
- map query params and headers onto struct fields
- return the right HTTP error code with `errs`
- keep passwords and tokens out of traces
- send a custom status such as 201 Created

## Example prompts
- Add a POST endpoint at `/orders` with a typed request body and response
- Write GET `/users/:id` that returns 404 via `errs.NotFound` when the user is missing
- Mark the login endpoint `sensitive` so the password stays out of traces

description: Define typed API endpoints in Encore Go using `//encore:api` annotations. Covers typed request/response structs, path/query/header/cookie params, and error returns. For raw endpoints (`//encore:api raw`) and inbound webhooks, use `encore-go-webhook` instead.
when_to_use: >-
  User wants to define an endpoint, route, or REST handler in their own Go service — anything with a typed JSON request/response shape. Mentions of an endpoint, GET/POST/PUT/PATCH/DELETE, paths like `/orders` or `/users/:id`, request body, query parameters (`query:"name"` tag), path parameters, headers (`header:"Name"` tag), HTTP status codes, request validation, `errs.NotFound` / 4xx-5xx errors, or `//encore:api public`. Trigger phrases: "POST endpoint at /orders", "typed Go endpoint", "GET /users/:id", "request validation", "return 404", "JSON response shape".

# Encore Go API Endpoints

## Instructions

When creating API endpoints with Encore Go, follow these patterns:

### 1. Basic API Endpoint

Use the `//encore:api` annotation above your function:

```go
package user
import "context"
type GetUserParams struct {
    ID string
}
type User struct {
    ID    string `json:"id"`
    Email string `json:"email"`
    Name  string `json:"name"`
}
//encore:api public method=GET path=/users/:id
func GetUser(ctx context.Context, params *GetUserParams) (*User, error) {
    // Implementation
    return &User{ID: params.ID, Email: "user@example.com", Name: "John"}, nil
}
```

### 2. POST with Request Body

```go
type CreateUserParams struct {
    Email string `json:"email"`
    Name  string `json:"name"`
}
//encore:api public method=POST path=/users
func CreateUser(ctx context.Context, params *CreateUserParams) (*User, error) {
    // Implementation
    return &User{ID: "new-id", Email: params.Email, Name: params.Name}, nil
}
```

## API Annotation Options

| Option | Values | Description |
|--------|--------|-------------|
| `public` | - | Accessible from outside |
| `private` | - | Only callable from other services |
| `auth` | - | Requires authentication |
| `method` | GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE | HTTP method |
| `path` | string | URL path with `:param` for path params |
| `sensitive` | - | Redacts request/response payloads from traces |

### Examples

```go
//encore:api public method=GET path=/health
//encore:api private method=POST path=/internal/process
//encore:api auth method=GET path=/profile
//encore:api public sensitive method=POST path=/auth/login
```

## Sensitive Data

Mark sensitive fields to redact them from tracing logs:

```go
type LoginParams struct {
    Email    string `json:"email"`
    Password string `json:"password" encore:"sensitive"`
}
```

Or mark the entire endpoint as sensitive in the annotation:

```go
//encore:api public sensitive method=POST path=/auth/login
func Login(ctx context.Context, params *LoginParams) (*TokenResponse, error) {
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE ff33fcd51290b15d

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the ff33fcd51290b15d tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
