# enable-ssi

Turns on Single Step Instrumentation in Kubernetes so apps send Datadog traces with no code edits. Meant for clusters where the Datadog Agent already runs.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through enabling SSI on an existing `DatadogAgent` resource. It first resolves context from the cluster itself: namespaces, deployment names, labels, app languages, cluster name. Then it extends the agent manifest and picks the targeting scope.

The real trap is silent failure. If a dependency manifest (`requirements.txt`, `package.json`, `Gemfile`, `go.mod`, `pom.xml`) lists `ddtrace`, `dd-trace` or an OpenTelemetry SDK, SSI disables itself at runtime. Init containers finish, the pod reports healthy, `kubectl` shows nothing, and no traces arrive. A package in the manifest is enough — it never has to be imported. So the skill greps the manifests first, and on a match tells you to drop the package, rebuild the image and restart the pod.

Check the ground rules before you start: Kubernetes v1.20+, Linux node pools only, and an app in Java, Python, Ruby, Node.js, .NET or PHP. ECS Fargate and SELinux-hardened environments are out, and on a tiny VM like t2.micro SSI can hit init timeouts. Node.js on ESM is not supported, and a Java app must not already carry a `-javaagent` flag. The Datadog Agent has to be installed and healthy — otherwise run `agent-install` first.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes, Datadog

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill enable-ssi -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/enable-ssi/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/enable-ssi/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill enable-ssi -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/enable-ssi/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill enable-ssi -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/enable-ssi/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install datadog-labs/agent-skills enable-ssi
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/enable-ssi/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill enable-ssi -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/datadog-labs/agent-skills --path dd-apm/k8s-ssi/enable-ssi
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/enable-ssi/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill enable-ssi -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- turn on APM in Kubernetes without touching app code
- catch silent SSI failure caused by a tracer package in the dependency manifest
- strip manual instrumentation and rebuild the image
- extend an existing DatadogAgent manifest with APM settings
- pick which namespaces and languages to instrument

## Example prompts
- Enable SSI on the cluster, the Datadog Agent is already installed
- Check the dependency manifests for ddtrace and opentelemetry before enabling SSI
- Extend the DatadogAgent manifest for APM and instrument all non-system namespaces

# Enable APM on Kubernetes via Single Step Instrumentation

> **Before doing anything else:** Fully resolve all variables in `## Context to resolve before acting`. Do not begin Step 0 until every variable has a concrete value.

---

> **Silent failure — check this before any other step:**
>
> If the application has `ddtrace`, `dd-trace`, or any OpenTelemetry SDK in its **dependency manifest** (`requirements.txt`, `package.json`, `Gemfile`, `go.mod`, `pom.xml`) — even with no import statements in code — SSI will silently disable itself at runtime.
>
> The failure is invisible: init containers run and complete, the pod starts healthy, no errors appear in `kubectl` or `pup`, but no traces arrive. The injector detects the user-installed tracer and exits cleanly without logging anything.
>
> ### Claude runs
>
> ```bash
> grep -rE "ddtrace|dd-trace|opentelemetry" \
>   requirements.txt package.json Gemfile go.mod pom.xml 2>/dev/null \
> || echo "No tracer dependency found"
> ```
>
> If any match — **stop**. Remove the package entirely (not just the import), rebuild the image, reload it into the cluster, and restart the pod before continuing. A package present in the manifest is enough to trigger this even if it is never imported.

## Triggers

Invoke this skill when the user expresses intent to:
- Enable APM on a Kubernetes cluster
- Instrument Kubernetes applications with Datadog tracing
- Set up Single Step Instrumentation (SSI)

Do NOT invoke this skill if:
- The Datadog Agent is not yet installed — run `agent-install` first
- The user wants to verify SSI after setup — use `verify-ssi`
- The user wants to enable Data Streams Monitoring: use `enable-dsm`
- The user wants to enable Profiler or AppSec: use `dd-apm-k8s-sdk-features`

---
