# empty-state

A skill for designing empty states: zero data, no search results, permission walls and load errors. Useful when a screen greets people with nothing but “No items”.

## What it does

The skill sorts out which kind of absence you are facing: first use, a query or filter that returned nothing, content that was cleared, a permission restriction, or a failure inside a surface that already exists. Route-level pages get their own pass — 401, 403, 404, 429, 500 and 503. Each case gets its own tone and its own recovery path: retry for a transient failure, sign-in for an expired session, request access for 403, home or search for 404.

There is a dead chrome audit too. The skill checks whether tabs, filters, sort controls or sidebars are still sitting on an empty screen while doing nothing, and tells you to hide them. The state itself is built from five parts: what the area is for, why it is useful, the primary CTA, an optional template or example, and which inactive controls should disappear for now.

Before any of that, the skill loads `$frontend-design` for its design principles and the context gathering protocol. If no design context exists yet, you have to load `$setup` first. This is not onboarding strategy: activation, first-run education and tours belong to the separate `onboard` skill.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill empty-state -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/empty-state/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill empty-state -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill empty-state -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui empty-state
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill empty-state -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/empty-state
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill empty-state -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/empty-state/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- explain what will appear in an empty section
- give a way out of a search or filter that returned nothing
- strip non-working tabs and panels from a blank screen
- match the recovery path to a specific error code
- switch tone for cleared content instead of first use

## Example prompts
- /empty-state projects list
- /empty-state 404 page
- /empty-state empty search results

name: empty-state
description: Design focused empty states for zero-data, no-results, permission, and error situations with clear value framing, strong CTAs, and less dead chrome. Use when the user mentions blank pages, zero-data screens, no results, permission states, or dead controls—not broader onboarding strategy.

Design or improve empty states so blank areas become useful product moments that teach, orient, and move users toward the next step.

This skill is specifically for zero-data and no-content surfaces. Use `onboard` for broader activation strategy, aha moments, first-run education, tours, and adoption planning.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/empty-state`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first. Additionally gather: the value users should reach from this surface.

## Assess the Empty State

Understand what kind of absence you are dealing with:

1. **State type**:
   - First use / never created content
   - No results from search or filters
   - Previously cleared content
   - Permission/access restriction
   - Error while loading content inside an existing surface
   - Route-level or full-page failure such as 401, 403, 404, 429, 500, or 503

2. **User question**:
   - What is this area for?
   - Why should I care?
   - What should I do next?

3. **Dead chrome audit**:
   - Are tabs, filters, sidebars, sort controls, or empty toolbars visible even though they do nothing yet?

If any of these are unclear from the codebase, ask the user directly to clarify what you cannot infer.

**CRITICAL**: An empty state is often the user's first impression of a feature. Treat it like a real screen, not a fallback.

## Plan the Empty State

Consult the [empty-state patterns](../frontend-design/reference/empty-state-patterns.md) for the main empty-state types, full-page error variants, CTA rules, and chrome-reduction guidance.

Design the state around this structure:
- **What this area is for**
- **Why it’s useful**
- **Primary CTA**
- **Optional template/example**
- **What inactive chrome should disappear for now**

## Build Better Empty States

### First-Use States
- Explain what will appear here
- Frame the value clearly
- Offer the clearest starting action
- Consider a starter template or sample data shortcut

### No-Results States
- Explain that the current query/filter produced nothing
- Offer a recovery action like clearing filters or broadening search
