# email-testing

An e2e testing skill for email-dependent flows: signup confirmation, password reset, magic-link login, OTP codes and notifications. It reads the real email instead of faking the endpoint call.

## What it does

The skill closes a gap where a test that signs up and clicks confirm still passes even though no email was generated or it went to the wrong recipient. It captures the actual message from an inbox, waits for it without a fixed sleep, pulls one unambiguous code or link out of the body, and finishes the flow. A broken template, an unsigned token or a recipient bug then fails the test instead of slipping through.

Inside is a decision tree for capture inboxes: Mailpit for local runs and CI, Mailosaur and MailSlurp for real addresses and parallel suites, ShazaMail for throwaway per-test inboxes, Ethereal for previewing a template locally. Polling instead of `waitForTimeout` lives in `references/mailpit-playwright.md`, hosted inboxes in `references/hosted-inboxes.md`, SPF/DKIM/DMARC checks in `references/deliverability.md`. Every test needs its own address: two parallel tests reading the latest email will grab each other's mail. Filtering by recipient and plus-addressing are not optional here.

Deliverability checks sit in a separate suite that does not block the functional tests. SPF, DKIM and DMARC come from the receiving server's authentication, not from the body text, so a DNS problem should not red your main gate. HTML rendering across clients, such as Outlook or Gmail dark mode, is outside what the skill covers.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill email-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/email-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill email-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill email-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills email-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill email-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/email-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill email-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/email-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- verify the signup confirmation email actually arrives with a working link
- capture an OTP or MFA code from the message body and feed it into the flow
- test magic-link login without copying the URL by hand
- stop flaky CI runs where the email is not there yet
- assert the subject, sender and link domains in the email

## Example prompts
- test the signup confirmation email through Mailpit
- capture the OTP from the email and finish MFA login
- password reset test: wait for the email without a sleep and follow the link

name: email-testing
description: >-
  End-to-end testing of email-dependent flows — signup confirmation, password reset,
  magic-link login, OTP/MFA codes, and notification emails. Covers the capture-inbox
  decision tree (Mailpit, Mailosaur, MailSlurp, ShazaMail, Ethereal), Playwright polling without
  fixed sleeps, template-aware extraction of links/OTPs from the email body, deterministic
  per-test addresses (plus-addressing, per-inbox), subject/from/header/link assertions,
  and SPF/DKIM/DMARC deliverability checks as a separate suite.
  Use when: "test the signup confirmation email," "password reset email test,"
  "magic-link login test," "capture OTP from email," "Mailpit," "Mailosaur," "MailSlurp," "ShazaMail,"
  "email arrives flaky in CI," "assert email subject/from/links."
  Not for: Sending transactional email from your app code, or API-only contract tests of
  an email provider — those are api-testing / app concerns. Email HTML rendering across
  clients (Outlook/Gmail dark mode) is out of scope (note it as a gap; use visual-testing
  or Litmus).

<objective>
Email-dependent flows fail silently: a test that "signs up and clicks confirm" by calling
the confirm endpoint directly never proves the email was generated, addressed, templated,
and linkable. This skill captures the real email, waits for it without a fixed sleep,
extracts one unambiguous OTP or link from the body, and completes the flow —
so a broken template, an unsigned token, or a wrong-recipient bug actually fails the test.
It also keeps deliverability (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) in a separate non-blocking suite so a DNS
problem never reds your functional gate.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Pick a capture tool | "Capture-inbox decision tree" below |
| Poll an inbox without a sleep | `references/mailpit-playwright.md` (polling helper) |
| Pull an OTP / link out of the body | `references/mailpit-playwright.md` (extraction) |
| Full password-reset / signup / magic-link E2E | `references/mailpit-playwright.md` |
