# eliminate-redundant-restores

Safely eliminates duplicate NuGet restore invocations across multi-step .NET CI builds and scripts. It prevents NETSDK1004 and NETSDK1047 errors when suppressing restore steps.

## What it does

Every no-op restore re-evaluates all repository projects and checks package state, consuming seconds to tens of seconds in large codebases. The skill reviews CI definitions (`*.yml`, Jenkinsfile), build scripts, and logs or binlogs for messages like `Determining projects to restore...`. It flags `dotnet build`, `test`, `pack`, or `publish` invocations that duplicate work.

Suppressing restores blindly with `--no-restore` often breaks pipelines. Before turning off restore on any step, the skill confirms that the project set matches, output directories like `project.assets.json` align, restore inputs (such as `-r`, `--arch`, and `TargetFramework`) are identical, and no intermediate command edited package files.

When a repository contains `Directory.Build.rsp` with `-restore`, SDKs older than 9.0.1xx still inherit that flag; you must pass `--no-restore -restore:false` to override it. If a build has only one restore or suffers from slow feed downloads, this skill will not help because network latency requires caching rather than deduplication.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill eliminate-redundant-restores -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill eliminate-redundant-restores -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill eliminate-redundant-restores -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills eliminate-redundant-restores
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill eliminate-redundant-restores -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/eliminate-redundant-restores/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill eliminate-redundant-restores -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- eliminate duplicate NuGet restores across build, test, and publish steps
- resolve NETSDK1004 and NETSDK1047 build errors caused by missing restore assets
- suppress implicit restores triggered by -restore in Directory.Build.rsp
- align runtime identifiers and artifact paths between explicit restore and publish steps

## Example prompts
- Check our GitHub Actions workflow and remove redundant nuget restores between dotnet steps.
- We got NETSDK1047 after adding --no-restore to dotnet publish. Can you fix the restore arguments?
- Inspect Directory.Build.rsp and tell me where to add -restore:false in our build script.

# Eliminate Redundant Restores

A no-op restore still evaluates every project and checks restore state, so each extra restore in a multi-step build costs seconds to tens of seconds in a large repo. The cure is easy to get wrong: `--no-restore` on a step that no earlier restore actually covered turns a slow build into a failed one. This skill finds which invocations restore, proves which are already covered, and changes only those.

## When to Use

- A pipeline or script runs several `dotnet`/`msbuild` steps and the log shows restore output in more than one of them
- A restore step exists, yet later steps still print `Determining projects to restore...`
- A repository `Directory.Build.rsp` or the active MSBuild installation's `MSBuild.rsp` contains `-restore`
- Someone asks where `--no-restore` or `-restore:false` can safely be added
- `NETSDK1004` or `NETSDK1047` appeared after `--no-restore` was added

## When Not to Use

- The first restore is slow (feed latency, missing package cache): that is caching, not redundancy
- There is only one restore across all invocations: nothing to deduplicate
- Restore errors about versions, lock files or auditing: fix the restore itself
- Unranked "why is my build slow": start with `build-perf-baseline`, then `build-perf-diagnostics`

## Inputs

Discover repository inputs in the working directory; do not ask the user for paths.

- CI definitions (`*.yml`, `.github/workflows`, `azure-pipelines*.yml`, `Jenkinsfile`) and build scripts (`build.cmd`, `build.sh`, `build.ps1`, `eng/`)
- `Directory.Build.rsp`, `Directory.Build.props`/`.targets`, `NuGet.config`
- Auto-loaded `MSBuild.rsp` beside the active MSBuild executable, or response files passed explicitly with `@file`. A repository-local `MSBuild.rsp` is not auto-loaded
- Restore evidence if present: step logs or a binlog
