## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through installing assistant-ui components via `npx assistant-ui@latest add`. Each component copies directly into `components/assistant-ui/elements/`. You own the source code and can edit Tailwind classes or markup immediately.

The registry provides two component variants. Files ending in `.aui.tsx` require an `AssistantRuntimeProvider` to stream context from the active thread. Standalone `.tsx` files take props directly, which fits tool outputs or custom mockups. You can also customize slots inside `Thread` via its `components` prop rather than forking the base component.

Without `components.json`, the CLI issues a warning and defaults to Base UI instead of Radix. Pointing the registries section to `https://r.assistant-ui.com/styles/{style}/{name}.json` ensures the correct primitive variant downloads based on your style choice.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill elements -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elements/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elements/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill elements -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elements/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill elements -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elements/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills elements
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elements/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill elements -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/elements
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elements/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill elements -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills/tree/HEAD/assistant-ui/skills/elements/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install prebuilt chat threads and sidebars
- render reasoning blocks and citation sources
- override Thread slots through the `components` prop
- add standalone diff viewers and agent plans

## Example prompts
- Install the Thread and ThreadList elements using assistant-ui
- Show how to override the Welcome slot in Thread with custom components
- Add the standalone agent-plan element to the project

Use when adding a prebuilt chat surface or widget (Thread, ThreadList, AssistantModal, AssistantSidebar, ToolFallback, ToolGroup, MarkdownText, Reasoning, Sources, Attachment, ModelSelector, Voice orb, McpConfig) or one of the 120 standalone elements (approval card, agent plan, code diff, data table, chart, and so on), choosing between runtime-connected `<name>.aui.tsx` files and props-driven standalone files, overriding Thread slots through the `components` prop, editing the copied source under `components/assistant-ui/elements/`, or picking the Radix versus Base UI flavor in `components.json`. Route here when an import from `@/components/assistant-ui/...` fails, an element renders unstyled, or the CLI installs the wrong flavor. For unstyled building blocks use primitives; for the CLI scaffold itself use setup."

# assistant-ui Elements

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

Elements are the styled, copy-into-your-project components that sit on top of the unstyled primitives. Every element is a TSX file the CLI copies into `components/assistant-ui/elements/`, so you own the source and customize it in place. The catalog at [assistant-ui.com/elements](https://www.assistant-ui.com/elements) documents each one with a live demo, a runtime recipe, and a standalone recipe.

## Two kinds of element

| Kind | File | Needs a runtime | Registry item |
|------|------|-----------------|---------------|
| Runtime-connected | `elements/<name>.aui.tsx` | Yes, reads the nearest `AssistantRuntimeProvider` | short name: `thread`, `thread-list`, `tool-fallback`, `reasoning`, ... |
| Standalone | `elements/<name>.tsx` | No, everything comes in through props | `elements-<slug>`: `elements-agent-plan`, `elements-code-diff`, ... |
| Renderer | `elements/<name>.tsx` | Used from a `.aui` element or a toolkit `render` | `markdown-text`, `syntax-highlighter`, `shiki-highlighter`, `mermaid-diagram`, `generative-ui` |
