## What it does

The skill diagnoses why full-text search on a content or catalog index returns weak results, then picks one lever. When a named document must win for a named query, that is query rules with a `pinned` rule. When phrases match poorly across the board, it tunes the organic query: `multi_match` over the mapped `text` fields, with short fields boosted, typically `title^2`.

Everything runs through the `elastic` CLI rather than direct HTTP calls. The skill reads the mapping and the current query first, applies the change, then checks top hits before calling it done. One thing it stresses: creating a ruleset pins nothing on its own. The pin only fires when the search body carries a `rule` query with the `ruleset_id` and `match_criteria` values for every metadata key.

It needs Elasticsearch 8.10 or later for query rules, plus `elastic` CLI 0.2 or newer with `stack es` support. The cluster can be self-managed, Elastic Cloud Hosted, or Serverless. ES|QL analytics, index ingest, cluster health, and vector or hybrid retrieval are out of scope. Sorting by price or date instead of fixing text relevance is also off the table — worth checking whether that is the problem you actually have.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-search-relevance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-search-relevance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-search-relevance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-search-relevance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-search-relevance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-search-relevance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-search-relevance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-search-relevance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pin one product to the top for a given query
- hide a document from results for a specific phrase
- fix ranking when single-field match returns noise
- choose field boosts from the index mapping
- verify rule criteria before shipping the ruleset

## Example prompts
- Results for "sale" are bad, pin document SKU123 first with query rules
- Replace the single match with multi_match over title and description, title boosted 2
- Inspect the catalog mapping and tell me which text fields to boost

# Elasticsearch Search Relevance

Improve full-text search results on content and catalog indices. Diagnose the mapping and current query, choose the
right relevance lever (query rules for deterministic pinning vs multi_match and field boosts for organic ranking), apply
the change, and verify top hits before reporting success.

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

## Scope

This skill covers **Query DSL** relevance on indices with `text` (and optional `keyword`) fields — product catalogs,
documentation, knowledge bases. It uses `POST /{index}/_search` for evaluation and query-rules APIs for pinned or
excluded documents.

Out of scope:

- ES|QL search (`POST /_query`) — use the `elasticsearch-esql` skill.
