## What it does

The skill lays out the `POST /_reindex` workflow step by step. The agent first checks connectivity and deployment type with `GET /`, then decides whether to copy inside one cluster or pull from a remote one. Before copying it reads the source mapping and document count, so field names are not guessed. The destination index is created up front, because `_reindex` does not carry over mappings, shard counts, or analyzers.

Long copies run asynchronously with `wait_for_completion=false`, and the response hands back a task id right away. From there the agent polls `GET /_tasks/{task_id}` until `completed` is true, reading `status.total`, `status.created`, and `response.failures`. Throttling can be adjusted mid-flight with `POST /_reindex/{task_id}/_rethrottle?requests_per_second=N` without cancelling the task. The last step compares document counts between source and destination.

Everything goes through the `elastic` CLI 0.2 or newer with `stack es` support; without it the skill tells the user what it is needed for instead of calling the HTTP API directly. Elasticsearch 8.x or 9.x is required. Remote reindex needs the source host allowlisted in `reindex.remote.whitelist` on Self-Managed and Elastic Cloud Hosted, and slicing does not work for remote copies, so parallel runs have to be split by query ranges. Check that before you start, or the copy will not launch.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-reindex -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-reindex -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-reindex -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-reindex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-reindex -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-reindex
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-reindex -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-reindex/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move documents into a new index with a different mapping
- copy only a date range instead of the whole index
- run a long copy in the background and wait for it to finish
- cut cluster load with throttling during reindex
- compare source and destination document counts after the copy

## Example prompts
- Reindex eval-reindex-src into eval-reindex-jan, only documents from January 2025
- Start the reindex asynchronously, show me the task id, then wait for it to complete
- Lower requests_per_second on the running reindex task without cancelling it

# Elasticsearch Reindex

Copy documents from source indices or data streams to a destination using `POST /_reindex`. An expert reindex workflow
prepares the destination explicitly, chooses local versus remote execution, filters at the source when only a subset is
needed, runs long copies asynchronously, tracks the task to completion, and verifies the destination document count
before reporting results.

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

## Process

1. **Confirm connectivity and deployment type.** Call `GET /`. Read `build_flavor` and `version.number` to know whether
   shard, replica, and cluster-settings APIs are available (Serverless manages shards/replicas internally and blocks
